First Impressions - Ultimate Ninja Storm 4
Available on PS4, XBONE, PS3, XBox 360, and PC; Version played PS4
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this is more than likely the last game in this series. If you have played any of the other games in this series then you pretty much know what to expect from this title. This game covers the last part of the Naruto story which deals with the 4th Great Ninja War. There are plenty of modes to choose from but for this post I would like to focus on the main story mode as that is what I spent the majority of time with so far. If you have played any of the previous games in the series, you know that the game keeps that cel-shaded style and over the top animations that people have come to know and love. I have to give Cyber Connect 2 credit they really know how to make an anime come to life in a video game format. The game looks and runs smoothly and has an awesome opening from Kana-Boon.
If there is one thing I don't really like about this game series it's the quick time events. Yes, they have been in the previous titles and to be honest I really didn't like them then I just deal with it. I will say this I do like the move sets in this game even if they are way ridiculous. Then again if you have been keeping up with the anime (the manga has been completed for a while now) you know what you are getting yourself into with this title. Fights in this game are mostly team based with the occasional one on one tailed beast fight. Each character feels unique and powerful and their movesets are plucked straight from the series. The main story mode offers two branching paths, one for Naruto and the other for Sasuke. There is also a grading system that lets you know how well you have done after each scenario with S rank being the highest you can attain. If you have read the manga then you know how this is going to end. If you have not I will keep my mouth shut, I will just say I like how it plays out.
I can just be honest with you all and just say that I play with the Japanese voice track. I have never liked the English voices for Naruto and I simply can't stand them. That being said I think the soundtrack is very good. The music fits the different scenarios that are presented in the story and there are also some tracks from the show sprinkled in as well. All in all I would say a good track all around.
Outside of the numerous QTE's, I think its a fun game for fans of the series. I will say that if you are new to the Ultimate Ninja Storm series you may want to start with a previous entry as this one does open fast and expects the player to know what they are doing. For fans of the series you probably already have it but if you don't it is more of the same. Its just that the story this time will deal with what happens at the end of the series. If you are following the anime and don't know what happened in the manga then hopefully they will get through the rest of those filler episodes soon. Fun game all in all, looking forward to going through some of the other modes after I am done with the Story mode.
