What I Liked
So last Thursday Nintendo had a Direct showcasing the 3DS and discussing titles that would release for the rest of this year and the early part of next year. I did host a Gamers @ Large thoughts podcast back on last Thursday where you can hear myself and Liger of N-Duo's thoughts on the cast as a whole. Here I just want to talk about what I liked and what I didn't like with the presentation. First, the likes. Overall, there was a lot of content discussed and updates dropped and I thought that the presentation in its entirety was pretty good. It had been a while since the last Direct and it was good to get a new presentation. The games that I found to be interesting were Pokemon Sun & Moon and their introduction of Z-Moves. This will no doubt add a layer of strategy to the game that should be a welcome edition for fans of the series. Super Mario Maker 3DS is another title that I was interested in, made for on the go gaming I think it may work out well for Nintendo. Tank Troopers is that weird title that I may just have to pick up because it is unique and the characters and gameplay just look plain weird and fun to play with. Yo-Kai Watch 2 is pulling a Pokemon and releasing two versions of their new title but I think it will work out for them. The game is setup in a way that I can see fans of the series diving into it just like the Pokemon fans do with their series. Now you all know I am a Legend of Zelda fan and those four new amiibo they are releasing for the 30th anniversary will be in my collection when they release on December 2nd. While we are on the subject of Zelda, the Hyrule Warriors Legends game saw the 3rd DLC pack release which cover the Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks games and also has a new playable character in Toon Zelda from Spirit Tracks. While I did like the fact that they mentioned and showed a little of Ever Oasis, I would like to see more of the game here's hoping that it will get its very own direct soon. Lastly, the final game that piqued my interest was the Pikmin game. I must admit that was one title I didn't think that would put on their handheld but it does look interesting and looks like it will be a fun game when it releases sometime next year.
What I Did Not Like
While I did enjoy the direct overall, there were some things that I just did not like. Before you think anything, no I am not mad/upset that they did not talk about their new console. Why? Its very simple it was reported that this Direct was going to focus on the 3DS. I see no reason to judge it based on the fact that it was reported ahead of time. That being said, I don't know about you guys but I just don't care about the Street Pass Games anymore. Don't get me wrong I like the update but the games to me are kind of tedious and boring to me at this point. Also and this comes from the JRPG fan in me but why can't we get the Dragon Quest remakes on the U as well. Personally, I could careless about Dragon Quest 7 as I thought 8 was the way better game. I'm just saying it would have been nice if there was a remastered version for the home console as well as the 3DS. I mean we are in the generation of the remaster as much as I don't want it to be, that's where we are at this point. Animal Crossing New Leaf and Mario Party Star Rush are two franchises that I just don't relate to, I know they have fanbases but the Animal Crossing Game is getting its own mini-Direct soon so the time the used for that portion of the direct they could have devoted to another game like Ever Oasis or Ace Attorney.
Personally, I don't think it was a bad Direct. It was a little under 35 minutes long. Which to me is perfect timing for a Direct. There was a lot of information to get out and while I know people want to know about the new home console I think that Nintendo did the right thing by keeping this Direct focused on the 3DS. The new console will need a bigger venue and format for its reveal. Check out the Direct when you have a chance as there was a lot of information in it and what I discussed was small in comparison. Let me know what you liked or didn't like from the Direct? Are there any games on your radar?
