A Gamer's Thoughts - Kratos from God of War

Games available on Sony Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and PSP

The Character
This is one angry Spartan. I mean seriously he has anger issues and he takes it out on gods, monsters, creatures, demi-gods, and anybody else stupid enough to get in his path. Back in 2005 Sony introduced  a brand new series, God of War. The game heavily influenced by Greek mythology follows a Spartan soldier named Kratos. The short version is he makes a deal with Ares, the God of War, to defeat his enemies. Kratos does but goes on a killing spree and in the ensuing bloodbath kills his wife and daughter. He begs the gods of Olympus to take those visions away from him and for lack of a better term they pretty much make him an errand boy until he bucks up and decides to kill every last one of them. Which is exactly what you do over the first three games in the series. Its a little bit of an understatement to call him an anti-hero because some of the stuff he does in game is just wrong and he does tend to go overboard from time to time. There are some animations in this game where you know its dead and Kratos is still killing whatever he's fighting its actually gloriously disgusting. That being said the character himself is a very tragic one and there are points throughout the series where the player can genuinely feel sorry for him. Of course this usually ends when he goes on another violent, rampage, and blood soaked murder spree but hey thems be the brakes as they say. In all honesty though few games make you feel like an overpowered badass like the God of War series. With a new game on the horizon set in a completely different place it will be interesting to see how the Ghost of Sparta will fare when that new game drops.

The Games
There have been four main console games and two handheld titles (I am not counting remasters). The fourth console game Ascension and the two handheld titles serve as prequels to the main three console games. The game is heavy on the action with a little light puzzle solving and platforming just to keep things interesting. There are a few RPG elements that are in the game as well. None of the games are long, they are about average length for an action game. The third game in the series actually has one of the most jacked up but fun endings I have ever played in my opinion.

Final Thoughts
Kratos has had some surprising guest spots in other games as well. A true testament to the character becoming a fan favorite for Sony consoles. He has shown up in the Playstation version of Mortal Kombat 9, as well as Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale (best character in that game in my humble opinion), and Soul Calibur for PSP.  At e3 2016 it was revealed that there will be a new game in the God of War series. This time the Ghose of Sparta has a son and it will be interesting to see if he has learned to quell his rage. They didn't show whether he had remarried or not but I am sure that will be explained when the game releases. Here's to an awesomely pissed off character that pretty much comitted deity genocide on Mount Olympus. What are your thoughts on the Ghost of Sparta? Are you a fan of the games? Which one do you think is the best? Are you looking forward to newest installment? Let me know in the comments below.
