Movie Review - xXx Return of Xander Cage

Synopsis (From IMDB): Xander Cage is left for dead after an incident, though he secretly returns to action for a new, tough assignment with his handler Augustus Gibbons.

That's right peeps, apparently, he isn't dead. Vin Diesel returns as Xander Cage in the next installment in the xXx movie franchise. Let's be honest at this point when you go to see an xXx movie you can't go in expecting a lot. These movies, in my opinion, are meant to be fun action movies with ridiculous stunts. If you go into the movie thinking like this then you may have a good time. Which I have to say, I wound up having a pretty decent time. That's not to say that there wasn't any unbelievable foolishness because there was plenty of that, but it wasn't a complete waste to me. The movie feels very much like an extension of the first movie that released way back in 2002. There are a couple of references to that movie but nothing more. From a visual standpoint, the movie retains that look and feel. It's still going for the "We're the anti James Bond type spies." There's nothing wrong with that in my opinion because I feel that this movie knows that it's ridiculous and it allows for the movie to be fun. The cast in this movie isn't bad or annoying. I will say that at first, I thought that Nina Dobrev's, tech support character, was going to be that way but I wound up liking her just like Toby in the original. Casting wise I don't think there was much of an issue as all the actors seemed to be enjoying themselves.

The issues with the movie are the ones you would expect from a movie like this hence why I say you have to know what you are getting yourself into in a movie like this one. This movie is outlandish and ridiculous all at the same time. If you try to think about the logistics of trying to pull off some of these stunts your brain is going to hurt. Another problem I had with the movie is the story in and of itself. They try to set up a red herring but the issue I have with that is I saw it coming. I would tell you what it is but it would spoil the movie. This movie is also hella predictable and some of the writing is cringe worthy at times with the lines they have to say in this thing.

For Parents
This movie is PG-13. Just like the Fast and Furious movies, there is some language, violence, and a lot of scantily clad women. The movie clocks in around an hour and forty-five minutes. The good thing is that the movie is paced well. There isn't any real slow down in the film and the action sequences and stunts they do are really well done even if the laws of physics don't apply to them.

Final Thoughts
I am really battling between MATINEE and RENTAL. I think I am going to go with a RENTAL for this one. It's not a complete letdown but I think that this is one of those films that you can watch at home and feel better about your choice. It does have good action and some good comedy, the characters are for the most part the best part of the movie. Have you seen xXx? Are you a fan of the series? Let me know in the comments.
