Synopsis (from IMDB): Rey develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker, who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares to do battle with the First Order.
First of all just wow. I enjoyed this movie for a number of reasons and I am not going to lie I will have to go back for a second viewing because I feel like I may have missed some things story-wise. From the outset, the movie looks great. I love the shots and all of the alien life on the different planets. The cinematography was great as well, the overall look of the movie amazed me. I can't really put my finger on it but it was just something about the visual's in this movie that worked for me. As for the story, this one of the more character-driven stories in the Star Wars movies that I can remember. The cast really made the story work in my opinion as each of the character's struggles and questions led to some of my very own questions. The story picks up right where The Force Awakens left off and the movie does a good job in my opinion of showing the resistance being outmanned and outgunned in this episode. There was a lot of great character development in this episode but the one that I liked the most was for Poe. I think Oscar Isaac has done an awesome job in the role and the arc that his character went on in this movie is great and helps set up an interesting episode nine. Now for the reason why you go to a Star Wars movie, the action. The action is great in this one, from the dogfights to the lightsaber battles they were awesome. There is one lightsaber battle where the tension is very high and your not sure if the characters involved are going to make it out. I liked how the action in this movie felt appropriately tense at the right moments. There is also a scene in here that I won't spoil but I will give it to Lucasfilm I did not see that coming. All around I thought it was a great job.
That being said I will say that while there isn't anything I hated there were somethings that did annoy me. The main one being Porgs. Look, I get it you want to sell toys and those things could probably be the next beanie babies but outside of one particularly funny scene, they didn't serve a purpose story wise. My other problem dealt with something that happens in the movie that is teased in the trailer. I can't bring it up without spoiling it so I will wait until I do the spoiler-filled review on my YouTube channel to talk about that one. There are a couple of scenes that felt a little off and one scene that I feel is probably explained but is on the cutting room floor. Once again I want to say what they are but that's going into spoiler territory.
Just like The Force Awakens, there are action sequences and tense moments. The movie is two and a half hours but it is paced very well and there aren't any parts that drag in my opinion. There are a couple of deaths but they are not gory and are handled like most Star Wars deaths are so nothing bad.
This is a FULL PRICE/BLU RAY rating from me. It is a great episode and fits well with Force Awakens. The story is well told in my opinion and the action and visuals are top notch. This movie has me very interested in episode nine and how things are going to unfold for the First Order and the Resistance. Also, Kylo Ren, in my humble opinion, was way better as a character in this movie than in the previous one. Have you watched The Last Jedi? What do you think? Let's talk about it in the comments and as always thanks for reading.
