The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug a.k.a Whatever you do Don't WAKE THE DRAGON

DISCLAIMER: I watched this movie in D Box. If you have the chance to watch this in a theater that has D Box I highly suggest that you do.

The Movie
Man what can I say about this one. Well here's the thing I am a fan of both the books and the movies, saying that I can understand how some "purists" will take issue with this movie. I didn't have those misgivings. Peter Jackson has made some changes to the story that don't hurt the story. Some of the changes I thought were actually pretty good, others were just so-so, not really hurting but not helping either. The movie starts out where the last movie ended, with Thorin and his company being chased by Azog the pale orc. This is why I like Peter Jackson's vision, because they way that this movie is shot is exactly how I pictured it in my mind when I read the book. The movie is also paced very well, by now you know these movies are going to be three hours long. The way Jackson paces the movie, I never found myself bo…

One Piece - Strong World Review

Disclaimer: I have to say that I have seen all of the One Piece Movies as well as the OVA's. I truly hope that Funimation will bring the rest of the movies especially Movie Z. Now that I got that out of the way. Enjoy.

The Movie

This is the 10th One Piece movie and was actually written by Eiichiro Oda (he's the author of the manga for those that don't know). The movie starts out with Luffy running from and fighting large monsters on a mysterious island. Right from the opening the animation is very good and looks a lot like the anime. Its also important to note that this movie is the first movie with Brook in it, he is the character that looks like a skeleton with an afro. As far as the movie is concerned the first part of the movie plays out like a flash back mixed with the crew meeting back up with each other. Its here where a lot of the comedy plays out as the crew is searching from island to island to try and get Nami back. Yes Nami gets kidnapped by the movie's main …

The Wonderful 101 Review

The Wonderful 101 - Nintendo Wii U

DISCLAIMER: Let me apologize. I meant to have this review up a long time ago but I was wanting to add a video of my personal gameplay and it hasn't worked out. So that is why I have been behind on my game reviews. Here's some advice never buy the cheapest game capture device. Do proper research and buy a good one it will save you a lot of headaches, trust me.

The Game
This game is made by Platinum Studios. Now if you know anything about Platinum its that the games they make are unique and usually hard to categorize. Some of their past IPs are Viewtiful Joe, Bayonetta, Vanquish, and MadWorld just to name a few. If I had to categorize this game I would say action/comedy, but to put it more plainly its like Viewtiful Joe mixed with Pikmin. Yeah that's the best way to describe this particular game. The story for this game is interesting. The basic gist is that you are a part of a secret organization that is trying to fight off an alien invasion.…

First Impressions - Super Mario 3D World

Super Mario 3D World - Nintendo Wii U

First Impressions
What can I say. Yeah this game is fun but first allow me to apologize. I got the game before I went on vacation and I didn't bring my Wii U. I had planned to have this impression done a lot sooner but that wasn't in the cards. That being said I am kind of glad I waited. The game itself plays a lot like Mario Land on the 3DS except better and in full HD. The game starts out with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad taking a leisurely stroll when they come across a transparent pipe. Why can't some people leave well enough alone? After the brothers fix the pipe a fairy pops out and so does Bowser, who escapes down the pipe. Peach dives in after him and that's how this party is started. If you have not heard by now the game is four player local co-op. There are multiple control options as well. I like using the gamepad personally, but you do have options for the pro controller, remote, remote and chuck, and classic c…

Why I am so loved

I was recently asked by a good buddy of mine a few questions about making friends online and do I have any guidelines that I follow in regard to giving out of my information. To be honest I am just friendly by nature and I always have been. When it comes to meeting people online my feelings are as long as they are respectful of me I don't see why I can't do the same. I'm not confrontational because everyone has their own opinions and paths to take in life. To me life is a journey and not everyone's path will be the same. That doesn't make me better than anyone else and that doesn't make anyone better than me. Saying that I have found that I do have one major guideline and that has to do in regards to children. I don't friend/circle them. I have had to block a few that kept trying to contact me and my reason for that is I don't know them and I am an adult. Other than that I don't really have any guidelines per se. The only information I have online i…

First Impressions - A Link Between Worlds

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - Nintendo 3DS

First Impressions

The first game I played on the Super NES was The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. As a matter of fact it was the first game in the Zelda series I played. I poured so much time into that game that its not even funny and while Ocarina of Time will always be my favorite Zelda game; A Link to the Past will always hold a special place in my personal gaming history. So its safe to say that I am officially stoked to be playing the sequel to that classic title. At first glance you would think that it is just a high quality update of that game, but once you start playing you get a sense of familiarity along with frustration. Not the bad kind of frustration mind you, but that good frustration that comes with knowing that while you should know where everything is you realize you don't and makes the adventure feel fresh. By now most people have seen the trailer for the game and have noticed the art style. Me persona…

Anime Movie Review 2

Fairy Tail Movie - Priestess of the Phoenix

The Movie
Just another guild job for the Fairy Tail crew. If you have kept up with this series at all then you know how a seemingly easy guild job can go wrong. That is how the movie starts off just to remind you that you are watching a Fairy Tail movie. The animation in this movie is pretty good but its obvious that it is being handled by another animation studio. Much in the same way the Inuyasha movies were handled by a different animation studio than the regular series animators. The story itself touches on some pretty heavy themes but is not brought down by those themes as there is still a good amount of that Fairy Tail style comedy. The action, which let's be honest for a moment, is what you came to see; is done very well. Even though the villains are for the most part just generic characters there to give the heroes somebody to fight, there magic is animated well and is very entertaining to see. For those that may wish to know, this…

New Nintendo Direct

New Nintendo Direct 11-13-13

So today Nintendo held another Nintendo Direct. There were a lot of good announcements but one of my favorite was the unification of the eShop and the addition of Miiverse to the 3DS. If you have a Wii U then you know about the Miiverse. I can't wait to see how the Miiverse will be utilized on the 3DS. There were some cool game announcements as well, I would go in detail but its probably better if you just watch the video.

Nintendo Direct 11.13.13

Thor The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World

The Good
The movie is action packed. It starts off with a background about what the dark world is and gives a little background on the main villain Malekeith the Dark Elf. You also get to see what Jane has been up to after the first Thor movie. The movie itself feels bigger in scope then the first one. They show a little more of Asgard as well as a couple of the other realms. Most of the cast from the first movie returns and they do reference the Avengers movie a couple of times which isn't to bad. The actors all do a great job in there respective roles in my opinion. Which brings me to Loki. Tom Hiddleston is awesome in this movie. Chris Hemsworth is good but the movie is at its best when they are on screen together. Like all of the Marvel movies, this movie mixes action and comedy well. It doesn't have as much slapstick comedy as the first one does but some characters have some good one liners. The film's villains are kind of weak but they serve there …

Public Service Announcement for the new gaming consoles

I just wanted to say a few words on the new releases coming from both Microsoft and Sony that are due out in the next two weeks. People if you have yours pre-ordered you do not have to go at midnight to pick up your purchase.  The reason I say this is because I want you to be safe out there.  If you just have to go because you have no patience, then at least take someone with you when you go.  Every time there is a new console release people get robbed or hurt by individuals who would rather take from others than get what they want the honest way. That being said I wanted to leave a few tips to make sure you stay safe.
DO NOT GO BY YOURSELF (especially if you are going to a midnight release).Park under parking lot lights or as close as possible.Park near the store or as close as possible.Be aware of your surroundings at all times.DO NOT GO BY YOURSELF!Me personally I will not be getting one of the systems at launch, so to those of you who will be purchasing one I hope you have fun with…

Call of Duty Ghosts - First Impressions

Call of Duty Ghosts - On Wii U, Xbox 360, XBOne, PS3, PS4, & PC; version played is the Wii U version.

DISCLAIMER: Being honest I have not owned a C.o.D game since Modern Warfare 2. The last one I played was Modern Warfare 3 with my nephew so my experience is going to be different from those who play every year.

First Impressions
So at first I wasn't going to pick this game up.  It has been a while since I have picked up an FPS and I wasn't sure about this one. The reason I picked it up was basically to help the Wii U out, that and the fact that I really wanted to see what Activision could do with the system. I have to say that after playing the first hour of the campaign I am impressed. The gameplay is good, the control is tight, and you have multiple control options. One thing you need to know though is that you have to play through the first level of the campaign mode to unlock the Extinction Mode. Squad mode is open from the start of the game and I am pretty sure a lot of …

My thoughts on the Winter Soldier & Days of Future Past

A few days ago some people asked me my opinion on two upcoming movies that are due for release next year. Here are my thoughts, enjoy.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
I have a confession to make. I have never been a real big fan of Cap, I mean I have read the Avengers and some of their crossovers but I was never a real big fan of his growing up. That being said, a few years ago a buddy of mine let me read The Winter Soldier arc and I thought it was amazing and really well written. Fast forward a few years and we have had some very good movies from Marvel Studios. While some people didn't like the first Cap movie, I enjoyed it and I thought that they did a great job on it. Chris Evans did a fantastic job as Steve Rogers in the first movie and did a great job in Avengers as well. So when I saw the first trailer for Winter Soldier I thought to myself 'that wasn't to bad'. I think Sebestian Stan looks exactly like the character from the book and I am also glad that they …

Sonic Lost World First Impressions

Sonic Lost World - Nintendo Wii U & 3DS

First Impressions
After spending a couple of hours with the new Sonic game a couple of things were made apparent to me.  First, this game feels like a mash up of Sonic Colors and Mario Galaxy. Second, it kind of feels like Sonic might have lost a step. Its evident from the first level that Sonic feels a little slow, Sonic's signature moves are there (the spin dash and homing attack) but to accelerate you have to hold the Zr trigger.  Simply tilting the left stick forward only puts him in a jog. Now some people may cry foul over this but in regards to the level design and gameplay it makes sense.  The levels are designed in a sort of free roaming type of way.  Levels feel big and Sonic is now able to run along side walls, up trees, etc. Sometimes the level will shift to a more 2D plane in an homage to the old Sonic Games. I find these little breaks to be fun as some of the 3D portions can take a little getting used to and its nice to have a…

The end of Battle of the Atom...Oh boy

X-Men Event: Battle of the Atom Parts 1 -10

The Good
As an X-Man fan it was nice to see Marvel's merry mutants get an event of there very own.  The story centers around the original first class of X-Men being in the present day. As you can expect this event is heavy on the time travel and while at first it made the story confusing I actually started to understand it toward the middle of the event. This story presents a large cast of X-Men and their future/past/present counterparts. Its that interaction that I find most enjoyable as the future teams don't want to tell the past/present teams what has happened to them. Some of the characters have extreme upgrades done to them and part of the fun is not knowing what happened and their younger selves wanting to know what happened to them.

The Bad
Marvel can we please move past this whole Wolverine/Cyclops rivalry or at the very least even it up.  I am kind of tired of seeing Cyclops go to the Jean Grey school and basically treating Wol…

Gamers At Large Episode 8

Marvel Comics Infinity Event

DISCLAIMER: The event isn't over but I decided to do a little write up on it as it has been extremely good.

This isn't going to be a review but I just wanted to say a few words in regards to this comic book event that is going on in Marvel right now.  IT'S FREAKIN' AWESOME!!! That being said I am enjoying this event very much.  I am not the biggest Jonathan Hickman fan, in my opinion he takes to long to get to the point and I often have to reference early books just to get the point when things finally start to come together in his works. I have to give him credit though, here the story is paced well and I have found myself looking forward to the next comic in the series. They are currently on issue 4 of 6 in the main Infinity story. I won't spoil anything for anyone but this is a damn good comic event. Way better than Age of Ultron, which in my opinion, was utter garbage.

Also I have am only reading one of the tie-ins and that is Infinity: The Hunt.  This 4 part ser…

Because sometimes I just miss the old school

For those old school memories

So I got my hands on the 30th Anniversary Capcom Character Encyclopedia.  Going through that book brought back a lot of memories.  I started gaming around 1988, (yeah I'm in my thrities) so the 90's era of gaming will always hold a special place in my heart. Games back then may not have been the prettiest but they were fun. Of course I spent an unreasonable amount of time in arcades.  I miss the arcades.  So for me you can understand why I am happy when I hear about an HD remake of a classic game or a release on each of the console's digital shops. I say that to say this a lot of newer gamers have expressed their distaste for remakes of games.  To them I say, IT AIN'T FOR YOU! More importantly you don't have to buy it if you don't want to, not everything is catered to everyone.  Different people like different things. Personally I like the old and the new.  The old school games serve to remind me of the fun that I used to have with …

Kid Icarus Uprising Review

Kid Icarus Uprising Review - Nintendo 3DS

DISCLAIMER:  I thought it would be fun to throw in a couple of reviews for the 3DS.  Up first is Kid Icarus Uprising.

The Game
Let me start this off by talking about the controls and yes I know this game is old but hey I felt like reviewing something.  I was reading an Iwata asks article from last year and found that this game was originally meant for the Wii.  It is interesting because I found that a lot of people were pissed off about the control scheme and the fact that the game came with a stand.  SIDE NOTE -  The 3DS was originally supposed to come with the stand but they decided not to add it in at the last minute. (Just in case you didn't know that.)  Me personally the controls are fine and I didn't mind playing with the stand as a matter of fact I preferred playing with the stand especially since I had the 3D turned up. Like Smash Bros, Kid Icarus has a plethora of different control schemes so finding one you like honestly should …

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Review

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Review - Nintendo 3DS

Disclaimer: I am a little biased here because I am a Zelda fan (I have statutes).

The Game - This game has been hailed as one of the greatest games of all time.  Originally released on the N64 in 1998, it won numerous awards and have been re-released a few times as well.  Now you can take the game with you on the go.  The first thing that you will notice is the graphical upgrade.  Everything in this game has been given an upgrade/redesign and it looks great. However, some of the animations for Link look kind of ridiculous.  For instance, when he rolls or jumps to the side it looks funny.  The 3D on this game is okay, the only time I used it was in Boss Battles and certain puzzles.  Other than that I cut it off and the game played just fine.  Everything runs at a smooth framerate but I have noticed that on some of the mini boss battles that you can actually lose yourself behind a wall.  It only happened to me twice, once in Jabu…

Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge Review

Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge Review - Nintendo Wii U

DISCLAIMER:   Ok in all honesty this game is not for everyone.  I just wanted to say that up front just so I could get it out of the way. Now on to the review.

The Game
To say this game is difficult would be an understatement.  That being said I enjoyed it a lot.  It's important that I say this but you will die in this game a lot, that's just how challenging it is.  You will get no mercy in this game, the AI will gang up on you, the mid-level boss is usually some ridiculous machine/monster, and the main bad guy has a British accent (not really understanding that one but whatever). The game revolves around the super ninja Ryu Hayabusa and it is spread out over 8 days. For the majority of the game you are trying to rid yourself of a curse inflicted upon you and stop said evil British douchebag. To change up the experience you get to play with Ayane, a staple character in the Dead or Alive series, she has a couple chapters in w…

Darksiders 2 Review

Darksiders 2 User Review - Nintendo Wii U Edition

Let me just start by saying I played the first and I thought that it was awesome.  I may be a little biased because I am a huge Joe Madureira fan (he is the creative artist on this game and a comic book artist well known for his work at Marvel and Cliffhanger).  That being said this game is a lot fun.

The Game
You play as one of the 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse - Death and throughout the game you are on a mission to clear your brother War's name.  The first Darksiders game dealt with War and the bringing on of the Apocalypse.  If you have played the first game the first thing you will notice is that A) Death has his horse Despair from the beginning of the game and B)Death is way faster than War in terms of overall speed, agility, and basic movement. It is also important to mention that there is no blocking in this game, you have to dodge.  Trust me you will be dodging often in this game.  Another thing that I have enjoyed about this …

Dead or Alive Dimensions Review

Dead or Alive Dimensions Review - Nintendo 3DS

Disclaimer - I got this game when it first came out and I started back playing it and thought might as well do a review on it.  Now with that out of the way.

The Game
Dead or Alive is a fighting game from our good friends at Team Ninja.  The 3DS game is kind of like a love letter to fans of the series as they take the characters from the first four games and bring them altogether for 3D violence and mayhem.  The game itself has plenty of modes most of which are common to anyone who has played a previous entry in the series.  The story mode a.k.a Chronicle takes games 1 - 4 and tries to tell a coherent story (focus on the word tries).  To be clear this is a fighting game people if you came here for the story I feel sorry for you I really do because it makes no sense and when they try to make it make sense it gets worse.  That being said it is still a fun mode to go through at least once.  After that you have your standard training, tag, free,…

Project X Zone Mini Review

Project X Zone Mini Review - Nintendo 3DS

Disclaimer: Its been a while peeps. Yeah this game isn't for everybody trust me on this one.

The Game
This game is the product of three studios: Capcom, Sega, and Namco Bandai.  It takes characters from each of those companies franchises and mashes them together in an strategy RPG game.  First of all this game has a lot of characters and when I say a lot I mean a lot.  You may notice some right away others you may not unless you keep a close eye on anime and are a fan of Japanese gaming culture in general.  Each character is rendered in sprite form with full voice acting (Japanese with subs) and it is done beautifully.  Each of the characters are given some way over the top moves that are dished out in rapid succession.  Combat takes place on a grid and you move your character to reach the enemy and the fight then shifts to a 2D animation of your character pulling off moves that you chain together. Story wise this game makes no sense whatsoev…

Code of Princess Mini Review

Code of Princess Mini Review - Nintendo 3DS

Disclaimer:  Its very important that I say this but this game is like an action comedy, beat'em up.  It takes its cues from anime and that means a little "fan service".  So if you don't have a problem with that then by all means read on.
The Game: This game is a throwback to the Sega Saturn game Guardian Heroes (which was freakin awesome, hoping for a Virtual Console release).  The gameplay is that of a standard action beat'em up from the 90's.  You basically take a character and fight with him or her through the level pulling off various moves and combos on a variety of enemies.  This game has multiple characters and modes.  Each character feels unique and their movesets are interesting to say the least.  Also this game has an RPG element to it, as you will need to power up your character with different accessories that have different uses.  Also after you clear each level you get points that you can designate to a d…

Pokemon Y First Impressions

Pokemon Y - Nintendo 3DS

The Game
I think its important to note that I haven't played a Pokemon game in years.  Its so bad that I can't even remember the name of the game I just know it was on Game Boy Advance.  Saying that, I am having a lot of fun with this game.  The story seems to be very simple which isn't a bad thing.  The gameplay is turn-based RPG style, like most Pokemon titles.  GameFreak has made a lot of improvements to the titles over the years and this one is no exception. You don't have to play with the 3D on and it still plays and looks great.  I usually play with the 3D on during battles as I like the effect.  The Kalos region is a big region and the game picks up pretty quickly and is paced very well.  The story I have heard is anywhere between 30 - 40 hours, I cannot confirm this as I have not beat the game yet.  There are a lot of extra features in this game as well as mini games. Just like in Kingdom Hearts 3D, you can play with your Pokemon outside …
