Comics Review: X-Men & Avengers Axis Book Three

Book Three: New World Disorder

The Event
So this week brought an end to the Axis Event. If you have been keeping up with this blog I have already discussed books one and two so I won't be getting into those. To me this event suffers from what previous events suffer from and that is the endgame. The beginning usually starts off very good and the middle is usually okay, but the ending is where things can spin out of control. With that being said let's start with my dislikes. For me, that's what happened with this story. It's almost as if Remender was trying to channel Avengers vs X-Men from two years ago. As the inverted heroes are trying to kill each other. The inverted villains and Spider-Man are trying to stop them. Many times during book three the writing felt out of control with to many things happening. It also doesn't help when there is more than one artist on each chapter, every artist has there own distinct style and having more than one can cause the story to…

First Impressions - Alphadia Genesis

Available on Wii U, PC, and Mobile
version played is Wii U

The Game
Alphadia Genesis is an JRPG game that is a throwback to the 16-bit days of role playing games.  Much like Final Fantasy 4 - 6 and Chrono Trigger the game boasts a top down view of the game world with enemy encounters being random. Its obvious that the developer has gone for that old school feel as there are no voice acted cutscenes and the artwork has a distinctly anime feel to it. The game centers around an investigation in to the murder of a rich man by two clones that he owns. The main character Fray and his younger sister Aurra, are the first two characters you meet. The king asks Fray to head an investigation into the murder and that's what kicks of the adventure. I am about five hours into the game itself and I have to say its not bad.

The Combat
This game uses turn based combat. I like my RPGs to have either turn based or action based combat. The combat system isn't to difficult to learn. I haven't run i…

Film Review - The Hobbit Battle of the Five Armies

The Movie
And that's a wrap folks. This movie marks the end of the Hobbit trilogy and brings an end to what is arguably one of the best film franchises of the generation. There is a lot to like here and some stuff to scratch your head at, especially if you have read the book. Now if you are a fan of the book then you already know that to make this three movies there had to be some elements added. I am going to leave the book out of it for the purpose of this review. Visually, the movie looks just like the previous films in the trilogy and I thought those films looked great. The movie picks up right where it left off with Smaug bearing down on Laketown and the people running in fear for their lives. It was action packed and I enjoyed it as the scene to me was intense. Benedict Cumberbatch is awesome as the dragon Smaug, as he sounds like wants to kill anything that moves. The standoff between him and Bard was great and the scene flowed very well to me. The CG in the film, while some…

Gaming Gift Ideas

Gift Ideas

What's up peeps. Today I wanted to help you out by giving some gift ideas for gamers. I'm pretty sure that there will be plenty of deals going on this week and next week. So what I want to do is give you a couple of picks for each system.

Nintendo's newest home console has a lot of variety this year in games released. This could make picking up games a little difficult. First thing you need to know is what kind of games the person you are buying for are in to, in other words, what genre's do they like. Once you know that picking up something should be a cinch. Here are a few of my favorites

Super Smash Bros U: The next title in the mascot Looney Toons fighting series featuring Nintendo characters. Its a pretty fun game, check out the game play video from yours truly.
Mario Kart 8: The kart racer is back this time with anti gravity tracks. It brings a whole new level to the game. Also the game supports amiibos, just like Smash Bros.
Bayonetta 2: My persona…

Film Review - RWBY Volume 2

RWBY Volume 2

The Volume
Its time for year 2 at Beacon with our favorite group of weapon masters/brawlers. Last year, this series was one of my favorite online shows and I even bought the dvd which was awesome as well. If you watched the first volume online the episodes were short and many people had an issue with this. This time around all of the episodes were around 15 minutes long, this made for more time with characters and getting to know them and their motivations for the particular series. The stakes in this season/volume were not exactly high because you still kind of don't know what is going on and neither do the characters. Visually, the show looks better than the first volume and the backgrounds look better and well down. Now when you watch RWBY you watch it for the action and the action is great. Each character's abilities are on display and fights are choreographed very well. Each episode in the volume got better in my opinion. Everything that you loved in volume 1 …

What Gaming Means To Me

A Gamer's Thoughts

If you know me, you know that I am an anime fan. I have been watching various anime since the late 90's and I have always liked them for various reasons but most importantly for how well their stories relate to life issues. One of my favorite anime's this year is Log Horizon, which is in its second season, its a series about gamers being trapped in an MMO game called Elder Tale. I will not get in to the specifics of that story but this past week's episode dealt with something I feel is relevant to true gamers.

When I say true gamers, I mean those people who do not bash others for what console's or games they enjoy playing. People who can talk to you about any game and treat anyone wanting to know about their preferences with respect without judging and insulting them. It is truly a shame that today a lot of people call themselves gamers or hardcore gamers and that title could not be any further from the truth.

Being a gamer for the majority of my li…

Game Cafe Reviews - Super Smash Bros U

Super Smash Bros U - Available on the Wii U

The Game
One of Nintendo's best franchise's is back on this time on both the 3DS and Wii U. For this review though I'll just be focusing on the Wii U version. From the opening video the game is just beautiful to look at, Sakurai and his team really out done themselves on this one. If you have played any of the other games in the series then you know what to expect. For those who don't know, Smash Bros is at its core a love letter to Nintendo fans. It is a 2D fighter that answers that most basic of questions, "Who would win in a fight, Mario or Link? Samus or Zelda?" It is a game that is the very definition of easy to play but hard to master. The series in and of itself is beloved by even the hardcore competitive gamer scene, as evidenced by matches seen at EVO. There are a plethora of ways to play and virtually every controller that is usable on the U is available for the game. However, if you were lucky enough to get…

Game Review - Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2 - Available on Wii U

The Game
So Bayonetta 2 came out back in October and as a matter of fact I have already done a review discussion on my channel for it. However, I have been feeling that lately I have been neglecting doing reviews here on my blog. So don't be surprised if you see a few reviews that have been discussed on the channel written out here. Now that I have gotten that out of the way, this game is still awesome. It's nice to have a game that is still as much fun to play a month later as it was when I played it on launch day. It really is a testament to Platinum Games and the amount of work and quality that they put in to this game. The story, like the first game, is ridiculous but works well in the world that Platinum has created. Taking place a few months after the end of the previous game. We find Bayonetta doing some Christmas shopping with Enzo when angels attack. During the course of the battle, Bayonetta's best friend Jeanne winds up getting her…

First Impressions Smash Bros U

Smash Bros U
Available on Nintendo Wii U

The Game
Its Smash in HD and it is off da chain. If you thought the 3DS version was awesome the Wii U version is about a 1000 times better. At the same time though it feels very familiar. The games' setup is almost identical to the 3DS version, however, there are some modes that are exclusive to the U. I will be going over those in detail in my full review (that will be done in about a week). If you did not get the 3DS version you will be happy to know that the game is a helluva lot faster than Brawl. The character roster is the same as the 3DS version but the trophies and assist trophies are different. Also some of the stages are different as well, there are a couple stages that are shared between both games. Also for people who like to create their own stages, the stage creator from Brawl is back and I have to say that I like the additions that they made to that feature. The game can played locally or online and everything runs smoothly and …

Game Cafe Reviews - Shovel Knight

Shovel Knight:  Available on WiiU, 3DS, and PC
version played 3DS

The Game
This game is an homage to the 8 bit era of gaming. Everything in the presentation screams it and I, for one, am thankful to Yacht Club Games for the throwback. The game itself revolves around the Shovel Knight and his quest to rid the land of evil. There are a lot of characters in this game, many of which are some form knight. This game is a platformer and as such has a lot of the platforming genre elements in it. To me one of the best things about the game is that it plays and keeps to its nostalgic 8 bit roots. Everything from the music to the button layout, to the visuals, and cheat codes will have the older gamers thinking fondly of the good ol' days. Of course right after that you will be yelling profanities at the screen being cheated out of a jump you know you cleared. Hey it happens in this game. There is a lot to love here, especially if you are a platforming enthusiast. The story isn't that bad a…

Comic Review: X-Men & Avengers: Axis part 2

X-Men & Avengers: Axis Book 2 Inversion

This little mini review is going to have some light spoilers. I kind of have to in order to do a little bit of synopsis. So this is your warning. If you read below this you have been warned.

At the end of Act 1, the united front of the Avengers and X-Men were able to take down the Red Onslaught. However, in the aftermath of the battle something just wasn't right. Act 2 begins with the Avengers trying to kill a locked up Red Skull. The X-Men suddenly under the leadership of Apocalypse and wanting to wage war on all of humanity. Carnage, Hobgoblin, Mystique, Sabretooth, and Doom are acting like good guys, saving people and trying to do good. Yeah every body has lost their ever loving minds. It seems that Magneto is one of the few that realize this and the danger that this actually poses.
Now as far as this act goes to me its not that bad. I have had some discussions with a couple of people about it and I can understand their i…

Movie Review Big Hero 6

Big Hero 6

The Movie
Well Disney I have to hand it to ya, you made me catch the feels with this one. This movie is an action comedy in the same vein as The Incredibles. I would normally do a short synopsis but its kind of hard to do without spoiling some stuff that happen early on in the film so I'll be skipping that this time. I'll make it up to you next time, I promise. Visually the film is amazing. The character models look great and really compliment both the action and comedy in the film. I also think that the voice actors all did an awesome job. Nothing felt forced and none of the gags ran on for to long. I also have to say that they have an enjoyable car chase in this movie. This year I have seen some well done car chases and this one ranks up there with those. As I said before I usually don't catch the feels in movies but just like Up, this movie got me too. There are a couple parts that just tug at the heart strings. I also want to mention that the movie paced well …

First Impressions - Sunset Overdrive

Sunset Overdrive - Available on the XBONE

The Game
I have to give it to Microsoft, this is a game I just didn't think they would bring on their system. Saying that I have to say that this game is pretty fun. The story involves a mutant outbreak after a new energy drink release goes horribly wrong. From the outset the game takes a sand box approach to the game play. It works for what you are doing in game. No complaints from me about that, also the story has a comedic and outlandish tone which also works. The characters that I have met so far are a lot of fun and have their own style and presence that makes for a rather enjoyable experience so far.

The Graphics
This game is bursting with color. I am so glad that the developers went this route. It goes with the tone of the story and visually it is impressive. In the gameplay vid that I will be attaching to this post you will see what I mean. I also like the 'punk' look of the game. You customize your character at the beginning o…

Comic Review: X-Men & Avengers - Axis part 1

Act 1: The Red Supremacy

We're at that time of year in comics where its crossover and event time. This fall Marvel is releasing X-Men & Avengers Axis Event. This story is one that has spun out of Uncanny Avengers and deals with one of the overhanging plots from that series. If you haven't kept up with that one here's the Geek Cornerstore short synopsis.

Red Skull have dug up Charles Xavier's grave and stolen his mutant powers has been using those powers to spread hate and fear across the globe. Magneto in an effort to rid the world of his menace kills Skull. Bad move, however, as this awakens The Red Onslaught. Both the Avengers and X-Men ban together to confront Red Onslaught and that is where Act 1 begins and ends.

Act 1 spans 3 issues and has a few tie in comics that go along with the main story. I am finding that I am enjoying myself with this one more so than I did with the previous crossover Original Sin. The bulk of the action takes place on Genosha with the he…

Film Review - John Wick

The Movie
This movie is a straight up revenge film. I have to give it to Keanu he did a good job in the role. The movie revolves around a retired hit man, John Wick, whose wife has recently passed away. He is devastated and then a puppy shows up on his doorstep. Apparently, before she passed his wife got him that puppy so that he wouldn't have to be alone. Its at this point that John begins to grieve and realizes he's gained a little buddy. I just want to say that at this point when I watched the trailer I will admit that I wasn't buying it, however, the way it is portrayed in the movie I totally bought the fondness for the puppy. The very next day, he runs into some low level gangster's that want his car, he says no, they follow him to his house beat him up, kill the puppy, and steal the car. That makes him jump back in to the life to get revenge and pretty much rain death on anyone who gets in his way. This is where the movie shines to me, as they do a good job of mak…

First Impressions - Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2 - Available on WiiU

The Game
Platinum Games is back doing what they do best and that is action. Bayonetta is the sequel to the 2009 game that was released on the XBox 360 and the Playstation 3. The game itself picks up a few months after the original left off with Bayonetta doing some shopping. Enzo, the information dealer from the first game is back helping her with the shopping and being everybody's favorite Joe Pesci impersonator. I don't want to give anything away but it's here where the story begins and the action does not let up off of the gas pedal.

The Combat/Gameplay
This game, like all of Platinum's games, is about speed and combos. At the end of battle you are graded on how well you did. The quicker you defeat enemies, the less damage you take, and the best combos you use determine your grade. There are a variety of weapons to unlock as well as accessories that will aide you along as you progress through the game. Just like in the first game, the com…

Death of Wolverine

Thoughts on the Death of Wolverine

Well comic fans, Wolverine is dead. The final Death of Wolverine book came out this past week and with all four issues out of the way I thought I would give my thoughts on the series as a whole. Now I have not been following the whole year long build up as I have some issues with that story itself. I am just going to focus on the four issue limited series.

The Comics
The series as a whole is not that bad. Wolverine is one of Marvel's iconic heroes but as of the last few years it seemed like he was in everyone's book. I mean it had seriously gotten to the point that people would joke that if your favorite comic wasn't selling just add Wolverine to it and in all honesty it felt like it from time to time. For some readers, I believe they started to suffer from Wolverine fatigue and you really can't blame them for that. So the non-spoilery synopsis is that Wolverine has had his healing factor malfunction and because of this he is now more vu…

First Impressions - Super Smash Bros 3DS

Super Smash Bros - Nintendo 3DS

The Game
Its finally here in North America. Smash bros on the 3DS and I must say it does feel good to be able to smash on the go. The game itself plays like Smash Bros. and like all of Masahiro Sakurai's games this one is packed with content. There are a plethora of modes to go through some of which are familiar and a few new ones. One of the new modes that I am sure a lot of people have heard about is Smash Run. Personally, I enjoy the hell out that mode, however, I should warn you I am a big fan of the Subspace Emissary mode in Smash Bros Brawl. That mode is kind of similar to the one in Brawl except you have 5 minutes to defeat enemies and grab as many power-ups as you can, once the 5 minutes are up you are placed in a random brawl utilizing the power-ups you have been able to obtain. Some people may not like the randomness of it, but me I love that part. Also you can gain different moves for your characters that can be customized to change up how …
