Heavenly Sword The Movie

Heavenly Sword The Movie

The Movie
This is a straight to dvd movie much in the same way that Final Fantasy Advent Children was back in 2005. This movie is obviously a love letter to the fans of the game. I had some problems with this movie and  I think it is because they were trying to stay as close to the game as possible. If you have played the game then you know the story. All of the characters from the game are here and their respective voice actors minus Andy Serkis as King Bohan. Alfred Molina steps up to the plate as the voice for King Bohan and Thomas Jane plays a character that wasn't in the game, named Loki. The game itself was action heavy and the movie is as well. One of the problems that I have with this movie is that the violence is uneven. The are quick to show blood but the animation just doesn't look right. Another thing that I didn't like about the movie was that at times it felt a little uneven. It was almost as if they were trying to make the story fit a movie structure and it really doesn't fit a movie narrative. The last thing that I didn't like was the inclusion of the Thomas Jane character. It just doesn't fit the story and it really makes no sense as if you played the game you already going to know how this is going to end. If you are an avid movie watcher you should still be able to predict what is going to happen.  There were some things that I liked about the movie. I thought that the fight sequences were done well. They also intertwined some of the prequel story animation that was hand drawn into the movie. Being a fan of the game it was nice to see the boss fights from the game handled in the movie.

For Parents
The movie isn't rated, however, there are scenes of action and violence. There isn't any foul language but there is a lot of fighting. Personally, I don't think that its for little children but aimed towards teens and adults.

The Verdict
I'm going to give this movie a RENTAL. It really isn't that good and was obviously made for fans of the game. That being said it isn't boring and the action is well done. The story is predictable as hell but you're not watching this movie for that now are you.
