First Impressions - Powers

Powers (The TV Show) - Avaliable on PSN to Playstation Plus Members

The Pilot
The show is based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. The world of Powers is a universe in which people with Powers live and co-exist with humans. A special division of the police is called for crimes that involve people with powers, affectionately called the Powers Division. Its here that we meet the main character of the series Christian Walker played by Sharlto Copley. The story revolves around him and how he copes with life as a normal human after losing his powers. The first thing that I noticed when watching this is that the production value isn't all that bad. As a matter of fact one of the issues that I have with the pilot is that it is to up and down. For everything that I liked there were about two things that I really could have done without. The show is clearly aimed at an adult audience and you can tell that tone within the first 15 minutes. The cast is decent, I will need to watch the rest of the season before I can give a better assessment but I thought they were fine. Visually is where I had another problem with the show, it looked like somebody went through the wardrobe of Back to the Future 2 and Generation X (the horrible TV movie from the 90s). Yeah, at times it was that bad. They did show some characters abilities and for the first episode it wasn't a complete waste. I'm not going to lie to you, I don't know what their budget is but I hope the special effects get better as the season goes on. I haven't read any of the graphical novel so I don't know how true to the source material they are staying. I have had people tell me how good the series is so I am remaining hopeful for it going forward. I did like some of the interactions between the characters. Sharlto Copley is one of my favorite actors out today and I think he is doing a good job, at least in the first episode. I know I haven't talked a lot about the character of Deena Pilgrim but I want to see more of her as the season goes on. I will say that in the pilot I did enjoy her character and some of the back and forth that she has with Walker.

For Parents
THIS AIN'T FOR KIDS!!!! Now that I got that out of the way. The show tries to shock people but if watch The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones this isn't going to shock you at all. There is a lot of foul language and violence (some of it laughable because of the horrible effects), there is drug use and a sex scene that is played in the background of a scene. The show is rated TV-MA, just so you know.

Nothing really grabbed me but for I am interested in watching the rest of the season. It's only 10 episodes so I am hoping that the show gets better. If you are a fan of David Slade he did direct the first episode. If you don't know who David Slade is, he directed 30 Days of Night, Hard Candy, and Twilight Eclipse.

**I plan on doing a full review when I finish the series which will hopefully be sometime this weekend. Also the pilot is up on YouTube on the Playstation channel.**
