OVA Review - Tales of Zestiria Dawn of the Shepherd

Image
The OVA
If you are a fan of the Tales of.... series than you know that the games have a distinct anime feel. Some of the series even have full on anime's themselves; a few examples are Tales of Phantasia, Tales of the Abyss, and Tales of Symphonia. Now you can add Tales of Zestiria to the mix as well. It runs about forty-four minutes, about the average length of an OVA based on a game. The animation is high quality and handled by Ufotable (they do awesome work). You get meet the main character, Sorey, as well as his best friend Mikleo. The anime starts out with the two of them exploring some ruins and running across the legend of the Shepherd as well as a human girl named Alisha. I don't want to go in to to much more but I have to give them credit the anime does a good job of introducing the viewer to the world. The characters are likable and the animations for them are very good. The action is fluid and nicely animated as well. All in all it is a very well done OVA my only co…

First Impressions - Transformers Devastation

Image
Available on PS4, PS3, XBONE, XBox 360, and PC; version played PS4

The Game
After spending a few hours playing this game I have to say that this is a fun nostalgia trip for fans of Transformers Generation 1. Platinum Studios has done it again, in my humble opinion. The game is an action beat'em up, which is what Platinum does best. You start off the game as the Autobots trying to stop the Decepticons from terraforming the Earth. The first thing you notice when you boot the game up is that cel-shade style that is reminiscent of the old cartoon. Your classic characters are here: Optimus, Bumblebee, Wheeljack, Grimlock, Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, the Constructicons, you know the usual guys. The opening sequence is actually pretty cool and makes me think what could Platinum do with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The Gameplay
Here is where some people may have an issue. The game is like most Platinum action games. If you are a fan of their work then you pretty much know what to expe…

First Impressions - Freedom Planet

Game Available on Wii U and Steam; version played Wii U

The Game
This is an indie title that in all honesty is a love letter to Sonic fans. Retro Sonic fans, that is, this game is in full 16 bit glory and I have to say is fun to play. When you first boot the game up there are two main modes, adventure and classic. Classic mode allows you to play levels one after the other. While Adventure mode puts the cutscenes in and tells an actual story. The game has a little bit of something for everyone. Personally, I am enjoying the adventure mode a lot as the story is pretty interesting and somewhat action packed aka violent, and that is right up my alley. You get to choose from two characters from the outset, Lilac and Carol with another playable character showing up later. Both characters feel inherently different so you don't have to worry about the characters feeling the same, gameplay wise.

The Gameplay
This game is an action platformer in the same vein as the Sonic the Hedgehog games f…

**Disclaimer: These are all games that I own and feel are pretty good on the system.

5. Borderlands The Handsome Collection
Bundles two games in package, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2. While Borderlands 2 is my favorite out of this collection, I do find this game to be a lot of fun. Its an action RPG shooter and graphically is handled in a cel-shade style. The story is action packed and has a nice amount of humor to help even things out a bit. There are a few issues but nothing that makes it where the game is impossible to play. All in all its a pretty good value especially if you are new to the Borderlands series.

4. Sunset Overdrive
Man I love this game. I wish that it would have gotten more recognition. This is an exclusive title on the ONE and it mixes a mutant apocalypse with an on-rails type action shooter. When I say on-rails, I mean that literally. One of the game play mechanics has your character grinding on rails. Think Jet Set Radio meets Aggressive Inli…

First Impressions - Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume 1

Image
Available on PS4, XBONE, and PC; Version played PS4

The Game
This is an interesting game, to say the least. If you played the first Afro Samurai game then you know what to expect from this follow up. In this game you follow Jinno on a quest of revenge against Afro for his part in what happened to the sword school and their master. This game plays out as a kind of prequel/sequel to both the game and the animated series. It is also taken from Jinno's point of view entirely. The game itself is broken up into chapters with cutscenes involving a voiceover and still pics as if they came straight out of the manga. The art in those sequences look good (I am a fan of manga in general and I have the Afro Samurai manga) as for the game, visually, it looks like the first game in presentation and style. The problem is in the polishing of this particular volume. That's right there are three volume's that will make up this game package and this is volume 1. On the Playstation Store you ar…
