First Impressions - Freedom Planet

Game Available on Wii U and Steam; version played Wii U

The Game
This is an indie title that in all honesty is a love letter to Sonic fans. Retro Sonic fans, that is, this game is in full 16 bit glory and I have to say is fun to play. When you first boot the game up there are two main modes, adventure and classic. Classic mode allows you to play levels one after the other. While Adventure mode puts the cutscenes in and tells an actual story. The game has a little bit of something for everyone. Personally, I am enjoying the adventure mode a lot as the story is pretty interesting and somewhat action packed aka violent, and that is right up my alley. You get to choose from two characters from the outset, Lilac and Carol with another playable character showing up later. Both characters feel inherently different so you don't have to worry about the characters feeling the same, gameplay wise.

The Gameplay
This game is an action platformer in the same vein as the Sonic the Hedgehog games from the Sega Genesis. The levels are sprawling and there are a lot of collectibles to find in each zone. Also there are many different paths for players to use, just depends on what you find. The boss battles are pretty fun and varied. At the point I am in the game I have fought at least 4 stage bosses and 3 mid level bosses. All of these bosses are different and the encounters never feel the same. For me that is a big plus in my book. The environments and level design is pretty cool as well. Speed runners should have great time with this title as this one seems to be screaming for a speed run.

The Soundtrack
This game's soundtrack is pretty good. The adventure mode is voice acted and the actors and dialogue is pretty decent. At the point I am at in adventure mode I have not been annoyed by any of the characters yet and the writing of the story is good. I have to give Galaxy Trail props they did a great job on this, now to see if I can find the soundtrack somewhere.

The Wrap Up
All in all I have to say this game is enjoyable and fun. Its a great throwback to the early days of action platforming titles. The visuals are great, the soundtrack is awesome, and the gameplay is tight and easy to get used to as well. On the Wii U there are different control options so you can find the right option for you. This is a title I can recommend to fans of the action platformer genre.
