Why Black Panther and Luke Cage are important to the Super Hero Genre

Image
With calls for diversity becoming more and more prevalent throughout all forms of media, I thought now would be a good time to give my thoughts on this topic as it pertains to the super hero genre. Comics have always been an escape of sorts for me. Growing up, I was/still am a nerd/geek and fantasy stories are my favorite type of storytelling. Also growing up (and this pertains mostly to comics) they weren’t that many heroes that looked like me or that I felt I could relate to in any shape or form. As a matter of fact this is probably one of the main reasons that the X-Men comics reasonated with me so much at that time. The characters were different and diverse (so to speak), also they were pretty much hated just for walking the earth and breathing air. If you read comics you know that crossovers and events happen from time to time and these type stories can be good or bad depending on who the author is and how the story plays out. This was how I was initially introduced to the chara…

Film Review - Kubo and the Two Strings

Image
The Movie
Kubo and the Two Strings is the newest stop motion film from the minds behind BoxTrolls and Coraline. The story focuses on Kubo's quest to retrieve three magical artifacts to help defeat the Moon King who stole his eye when he was a baby. Can you say WORST GRANDFATHER EVER!!!! I am not going to lie, I am a fan of the Laika stop motion animated movies. Its just something about the quality of the work that speaks to ya boy. So needless to say I was really looking forward to watching this movie.  The movie is visually stunning and there are some really cool things that the animators do with paper and origami that are really cool to see.  The way the story is set up its easy to follow, also some parts of very predictable it didn't take away from the movie for me because the characters are likable and carry the story. Another element of the movie that caught me by surprise was the score. I thought it was well done especially during the action and storytelling sequences. T…

Thoughts on DC's Rebirth

Image
A few month's back DC went through a new comic event entitled Rebirth. Rebirth was meant to be a return to form for the comic company and be a departure from the issues that plagued the New 52. There was a lot of talk before the relaunch of bringing back the themes from before the New 52's launch. The initial book which focused on Wally West trying to connect with someone before the speed force bascially "blinked" him out of existance was a very good book that served to show the DC multiverse and how certain characters were affected. I won't get into the specifics but to me it was a nice start off to the Rebirth line. Another thing that I like about this particular relaunch is the fact that the books are $2.99. DC my wallet thanks thee. That being said there are a few books that have caught my eye and that I am currently following. There is also one that I want to get in to but will have to wait until it drops as DC has taken a staggered release on some of their…

First Impressions - I Am Setsuna

Image
Available on PS4, PSVita, and PC; Version on PS4

The Game
Sometimes it just feels good to play a game that hearkens back to the height of JRPGs. I Am Setsuna is a title that aims to hit all of the players nostaglia for the JRPGs of the early and mid 90's. The game's story follows the title character of Setsuna as she embarks on a journey of sacrifice to help stop the influx of monsters from terrorizing her world. Your character is a mercenary who is hired to kill her but winds up accompanying her on her journey. Will he kill her before she is able to sacrifice herself in the Last Lands? Well you have to play the game to find out. If you have ever played Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana then you have a pretty good idea how this game will play. The battle system for the game takes its cues from Chrono Trigger and its a system where you must pay attention and think ahead in order to be successful. Tokyo RPG Factory has done an awesome job in my opinion with the gameplay as well as…

Thoughts on the Luke Cage Netflix Series

Image
Sup peeps. Since I didn't do a San Diego Comic Con review or thoughts post I am going to just talk about some of my favorite reveals from the show. First up is the Luke Cage Netflix Series. They revealed a trailer at comic con and of course they had a panel with the actors but earlier this week an official trailer was released and I can't even lie it got me hyped for the show. As you may know I am first and foremost an X-Men fan. The X-Men universe is what got me interested in comics and manga but that doesn't mean I wasn't aware of other comics. The Heroes for Hire and Luke Cage comics were one of those comics that I paid attention to and grew to like.

The Character and The Show
Cage himself isn't a really complicated hero. He is a straight forward tells it like it is hero who you would want on your side when crap hits the fan. He gained his abilities from a sabotaged experiment while in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Basically, another doctor in the Mar…

Comic Book Pull/Recommendation: Black Panther

Image
The Comic
If you watched Captain America Civil War there were a few standout perfomances. One of which being Chadwick Boseman's portrayal of the Wakandan Prince T'Challa. The comic has recently had a reemergence of sorts and is currently one of my favorite books. The first arc, A Nation Under Our Feet, wrapped up in issue four and it deals with T'Challa feeling the weight of the crown after numerous attacks to Wakanda and a full blown revolution at his doorstep. Ta-Nehisi Coates has done an excellent job of crafting a story that gives the reader a look into Wakanda and just how much the issues there are affecting the King. Wakanda feels like a real place and Coates does an awesome job making the country feel alive. Brian Stelfreeze also does an amazing job on the artwork. I find his artwork to be vibrant and I am able to see the action as well as the important moments of drama. One of my pet peeves in comics is when the artist's work is so wild where you, as the reader…

Film Review - Suicide Squad

Image
The Movie
Color me pleasantly surprised at this one. To be honest I had no feelings one way or another going into this movie. I am, of course, aware of the Suicide Squad and its various members over the years. This being the first live action take on Task Force X and I have to say DC not bad. The movie does have its issues but compared to their past films I say this one is actually not that bad. I think some of the criticisms of this movie are unjustified but some are completely justifiable. The movie is set up 3 months after Batman vs Superman (which by the way contradicts what was stated initially that the film would take place three months before BvS, maybe that's what the reshoots were for) Amanda Waller has decided to take a group of villains from Bell Reve Prison to form Task Force X to take on jobs that need to be handled discreetly in exchange for time off of their sentences. Should their mission fail or they try to escape their heads get blown off. Where this movie shines…

Film Review - Batman The Killing Joke

Image
The Movie
Its taken me a couple of days to get my thoughts together on this movie. If you don't know this is the newest animated feature from WB and DC Comics. It is an adaptation of one of the most famous Batman stories. It is iconic for a number of reasons and also controversial for a few reasons as well. The story revolves around the Joker setting out to prove that any man can be driven insane. To drive this point home he kidnaps and terrorizes Commissioner James Gordon which brings Batman in to save his friend. The graphic novel is a great read and if you are a fan of Batman that book should be in your collection. The movie not so much. The reason why is that the film makers make a number of changes that are just bad. The first 35 minutes of the movie involves Barbara Gordon and in all honesty is one of my issues with the movie as they make Batgirl unlikable in my opinion. That and the fact that the opening story feels like a completely different narrative that was tacked on t…
