Comic Thoughts - Death of X

Death of X 4 issue limited series

The Series
If you have been reading Marvel comics for the past few months, especially the X-Men side of things there may have been a few questions that have been running through your mind. None as loudly as what in the hell happened to Cyclops and where are the X-Men hiding out in Limbo. What is this M-pox virus and why do mutants start running when the Terrigen Cloud shows up? Well Death of X begins to answer these questions. The four issue limited series tells part of the story of what happened in the eight months after Secret Wars ended. This event leads in to the big Inhumans vs X-Men crossover that will begin in December and I am hoping that it is better than the last couple of event comics that I have read.

The comic itself begins with Cyclops and Emma Frost going to Muir Island after the terrigen cloud hits the island. The readers then find a pretty horrific scene as we find out that Jamie Madrox and a lot of his clones are dead. As a long time …

Gaming Recommendation - Tales of Zestiria

Available on PS4, PS3, and PC

The Game
This is one of my favorite gaming franchises around. The Tales of series of games are a collection of JRPG titles that is more action RPG than turn-based RPG. Each game in the series tells a different standalone story but usually has elements of previous titles in the games. This time around the game centers around Sorey, a young man who has lived in a village of celestials ever since he was little. One day he finds a young knight, Alisha Diphda, in some ancient ruins and that meeting begins a chain of events that kick off the game. Like most games in the Tales series this game is heavily influenced by anime and has a lot of anime tropes in it as well. As a fan of anime I don't mind one bit but it is important to know as a lot of story beats usually follow those same tropes. As far as the characters are concerned each one is likable in their own way and the voice acting is very good as well. Graphically speaking, the game is beautiful to look …

Gaming Recommendations - Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge

Available on PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U; version owned Wii U

The Game
Gamings most famous super ninja is back in the 3rd game in the action series from Tecmo Koei. Razor's Edge was a Wii U launch title and at the time was an updated version of the original Ninja Gaiden 3 game (which was awful by comparison) and was eventually ported to the PS3 and 360. The game follows Ryu Hayabusa as he has eight days to rid himself of a curse or die. The game has a globe trotting feel to it as Hayabusa has to travel the world in order to track down the person(s) responsible for his troubles. Along the way he will meet up with other characters from the Ninja Gaiden series like Ayane and Momiji. Even Rachel makes an appearance in the game. The game is heavy on the action adventure genre side of gaming. If you have not played a previous game in this series then you should know that it is a very challenging game. It is easy to become frustrated if you are not used to this because Ninja Gaidens Normal M…

Gaming Recommendations - Halo 5

Available on XBONE and PC

The Game
I must admit I am a fan of the Halo series. I find the story to be interesting and the latest installment is worth a pickup and a worthy addition to the XBox game library. Since it is one of the biggest franchises in gaming I will forgo my usual synopsis and just say that this one picks up where Halo 4 leaves off. Master Chief is looking for Cortana and goes off the grid so to speak. This game introduces Spartan Jameson Locke who is given the task to "Hunt" the Master Chief. The main story campaign of Halo 5 is very good and pretty sizable. Normally in FPS games the main campaign is at between 4 - 6 hours but this one can easily take up to 15 hours to complete. The main draw of the game is the multiplayer and I have to give it to 343 Studios they did a good job with the variety of modes available to gamers for the multiplayer. As the multiplayer is always interesting and I have never had an issue finding a lobby or getting a game started. My…

Gaming Recommendations - Xenoblade Chronicles X

Available on the Wii U

The Game
This game came out close to this time last year and while people have their own personal feelings about the game itself one thing you cannot deny is that they do not skimp on the content. The game opens with Earth getting wiped out and blown up Dragon Ball Z style with the last remnants of humanity aboard a huge ship called the White Whale. The ship crash lands on a planet called Mira and from there the game begins. Graphically speaking the game is beautiful and expansive. This game is huge and has plenty to see and do in the game world. It can get it a little crazy with all the side quests that you have the option of taking and believe me its in your best interest to do some of those quests. As far as the story goes I found it enjoyable. I have talked to people who don't really like the story because they were comparing it to the Xenoblade Chronicles game that came out on the Wii. I can't really blame them for that way of thinking but I still th…

Comic Recommendations - Playing a little catch up

It has been a while since I gave some comic recommendations and for that I apologize. So here are some recommendations from my collection. These are comics that I am personally enjoying so far so when you have a chance check them out.

This is an independent comic and I have to give props to Camille at The Amazing Comic Shop in Fairfax, VA for recommending this one. First of all the book is in black and white, it kind of has that Walking Dead feel to it in a way. This comic however deals with people finding out they have abilities with one twist. There are only a small portion of the population that have abilities and the only people who have these abilities are black. Shadowy government agencies, crooked cops, and questionable alliances is how this comic starts out. Two issues in and I have to say that I am interested in where this story goes, especially with how the main character deals with his newfound powers and what he does with them.

A Gamer's Thoughts - Kratos from God of War

Games available on Sony Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and PSP

The Character
This is one angry Spartan. I mean seriously he has anger issues and he takes it out on gods, monsters, creatures, demi-gods, and anybody else stupid enough to get in his path. Back in 2005 Sony introduced  a brand new series, God of War. The game heavily influenced by Greek mythology follows a Spartan soldier named Kratos. The short version is he makes a deal with Ares, the God of War, to defeat his enemies. Kratos does but goes on a killing spree and in the ensuing bloodbath kills his wife and daughter. He begs the gods of Olympus to take those visions away from him and for lack of a better term they pretty much make him an errand boy until he bucks up and decides to kill every last one of them. Which is exactly what you do over the first three games in the series. Its a little bit of an understatement to call him an anti-hero because some of the stuff he does in game is just wrong and he does t…

Gaming Recommendations - The Wonderful 101

Available on Nintendo Wii U

The Game
Back in 2013 Platinum Studios released The Wonderful 101 on the Wii U. The game centers around a group of heroes that must unite to save the world from an alien invasion. The game is unique in the fact that it was one of the first games that used the Game Pad in a truly creative way. If I had to describe this game it would be Pikmin meets Viewtiful Joe. Its story is a truly over the top take on super hero fiction. When I say over the top believe me it can get over the top. The way certain characters act and even certain story points are melodramatic and overdramatic and this is done on purpose to truly hilarious effect. Trying to find all 100 characters can be a daunting task, but finding them can be fun in and of itself as some of these characters have funny costumes and backgrounds. Also don't be surprised if you get some innuendo and pop culture references as the game is brimming with those as well.

As I said earlier this was one of t…

A Gamer's Thoughts - Link

The Character
The hero from my favorite gaming series, Link is one of the main characters of the Legend of Zelda. He is the bearer of the triforce of Courage and is generally known for being brave beyond reason. Since the Ocarina of Time game each version of Link has been a little different from the previous hero. The game's three main characters are stuck in a cycle of reincarnation. However, I always have found it interesting that Link is the one who is vastly different from his previous incarnations. For example, the Link of Ocarina of Time is ridiculously brave, while the Link from Wind Waker is reckless, the Link from Twilight Princess can be vicious, and the Link from Skyward Sword is obviously in love. It will be interesting to see what Link from Breath of the Wild is going to be like once that game releases. While each Link is different they do share some similiarities. For instance, Link has always been an animal lover. He always seems to be able to make friends with the …

Comic Recommendations - The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Legendary Edition

Available on and major bookstores

The Collection
This book is a collection of the Ocarina of Time manga by Akira Himekawa. Everything is collected into one big graphical novel. The collection also includes the side stories as well. As a Legend of Zelda fan you had to know I was getting this right? It has been awhile since the original mangas were released and it being the 30th anniversary of the series it works for me. For those that missed out the first time this is not a bad collection. The first chapter is in color (except for the last two pages of it) and the artwork is very well done. It reminds me a lot of Kosuke Fujishima's artwork from the game. If you have the original manual or Hyrule Historia he did the artwork for Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. The story itself is a very good adaptation of the game. Its broken up into two stories; one for Child Link and one for Adult Link. All of the chapters do a great job of adapting key moments from the game and bu…

Film Review - Dr. Strange

The Movie
Okay, that was a trippy movie. I want to preface this that if you do go and watch this movie please watch in 3D. Trust me, you'll thank me for it later. Now that that's out of the way. Dr. Strange is the newest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its about an extremely arrogant but brillant nuerosurgeon Stephen Strange. One night while on his way to speak at a benefit he wrecks his car and loses the use of his hands. After using up all of his resources financial and otherwise, he finds out about one last place he might be able to heal his hands. When he goes to Nepal he finds much more than he bargained for and learns the endless possibilities of the multiverse. First thing first here I'm not going to talk about the controversy surrounding this film in this post. That being said there is a lot to like about the movie. Once again Marvel does a very good job with the casting of the film. Benedict Cumberbatch does a very  good job as Dr. Strange, if you have …

Nintendo Direct - Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing New Leaf Amiibo Festival

What up peoples. So Nintendo had there Animal Crossing Direct this morning, a little weird for my taste but entertaining nonetheless. I will not lie to you. I am not a fan of Animal Crossing. The series has a following but it just doesn't interest me personally. That being said this brief direct was informative for those of you who are fans of the series. The setting for this Direct is at an RV Park campground. The Direct is also a mix of weird live action cosplay and game footage. Amiibo is heavily used in the update for the game that is available right now. They have a lot of different uses, I won't get into it here as it is explained in the Direct. The game can use amiibo cards and figures, all previous generations of the cards can be used. Some of the amiibo figures can unlock a couple of games Desert Island Escape and Animal Crossing Puzzle League. I'm not gonna lie the Desert Island Escape game does look pretty interesting. Th…

Series Review - Stranger Things Season 1

Available on NetFlix
*Disclaimer: I know I'm a little late to the party but due to my health I wasn't able to watch it when it first aired and finally got a chance to watch it recently.

The Season
So I finally got around to finishing Stranger Things Season 1 and as a child of the 80's I wholeheartedly approve. There is a lot to like here especially if you are a fan of films like The Goonies. The season revolves around the disappearance of a young boy named Will Byers. What Stranger Things does well is pacing. Nothing felt like it wasn't important or needed. In my opinion there weren't any filler episodes and I personally thought that the episode count was perfect at eight. The actors did a great job making it feel like the 80's (the season is set in 1983). For fans of Easter Eggs and pop culture references there are plenty set in each episode throughout the season. They also did a great job on the creature effects and showing the other dimension. I have to say th…
