Gaming Recommendations - Transformers Devastation

Available on PS4, PS3, XBONE, XB360, and STEAM

The Game
Platinum Studios how do I love thee. This game is an awesome entry for fans of the Generation 1 version of Transformers, basically the 80's cartoon. They even have a number of the voicecast to make it feel extra authentic. Overall the game feels like a giant episode of Transformers. The Decepticons lead by Megatron have a plan to terraform Earth into a place more hospitable for Cybertronians and its up to Optimus and the Autobots to stop them and protect the Earth. Yeah, its pretty much the plot for most of the early episodes of Transformers and that's not a bad thing in my opinion. Not gonna lie the game is high on the nostalgia factor as it oozes Saturday morning greatness. Graphically, the game uses a cel shaded style. Its awesome to see the Autobots and Decepticons in the original designs and with their original voice actors. Yes the game is over the top, but to me that's a selling point as I would want the action to amazing. If there is one thing Platinum Studios is known for it is action and there is nothing like playing as Optimus and facing down Devastator all within the first 20 minutes of the game.

The game play reminds me of the side scrolling beat'em ups of the late 80's and early 90's. The first act of the game has you playing as certain autobots and serves as a tutorial of sorts. Once that is out of the way you are free to pick whichever Autobot you wish to play with, I found myself playing as Optimus and Bumblebee most of the time. Like most Platinum Studio games you can upgrade your weapons and you will be graded at the end of each section. The one down side is that the game isn't particularly long. It is under 10 hours for most gamers. That may be a turn off, I actually didn't mind it though as I have a lot of games and some of them I wonder why are they as long as they are, this one turned out to be just fine for me. The learning curve for the game isn't that high as it is pretty easy to pick up. I will say that fighting Devastator was fun but can be a pain as he has plenty of sweeping attacks. There is variety in the gameplay as you will have to navigate certain hazards as well as fight decepticons. Transformations are also used as part of the combat. It helps to knock chunks off of that life bar. All in all I found the game play to be perfect for this game.

Final Thoughts
A true love letter to fans of classic Transformers. The game does have some problems but it is still a lot of fun to play. You can find the game for cheap now as it is over a year old. I may jump back into it myself in the future. Are you a fan of Generation 1 Transformers? Are you thinking about picking up the game? Let me know in the comments.
