What's on my Radar 2017 Pt. 2

2017 Games - Nintendo Edition

Just like with my Sony entry I want to focus on the games that have piqued my interest for the first half of 2017. That being said these are just the games that I will be purchasing at launch or planning on purchasing at some point later. So let's see what I am pumped about on the Nintendo side of things.  Also, it should go without saying but all of the games are for the Switch. I really shouldn't have to spell it out but better to be safe than sorry.

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
As a huge Zelda fan, I am looking forward to this latest entry in the series. This looks to be the biggest Zelda game to date and judging by the latest trailer will finally have voice acting. There are plenty of videos from the Treehouse on Nintendo's YouTube channel if you wish to see the game in action. This game will release with the Switch on March 3, 2017, and will more than likely be the only game I will be playing when it releases.

This game caugh…

Netflix Movie Review - iBOY

Available on NetFlix

Synopsis (IMDB): After being shot while calling for help trying to stop a violent attack on a high school girl, a 16-year-old boy awakens from a coma to discover that fragments of his smartphone have embedded in his brain, giving him super powers. He uses this knowledge and technology to exact revenge on the gang responsible for the attack.

This film is based on a book of the same name written by Kevin Brooks.I admit, I have not read the book and I am interested to see how the book is in relation to the movie. The film itself is actually pretty good. It is shot like an indie film and uses the CG in interesting and subtle ways. Now being completely honest the mere fact that a person is shot in the head and pieces of his phone get embedded in his brain and said person survives is ridiculous in and of itself. I totally admit that, however, the strength of the movie lies with the characters. The setting for this movie is England and from what I can only guess is a housi…

What's on my Radar 2017 Pt.1

2017 Games - Sony Edition

For this entry, I want to focus on the games which have caught my attention for the first half of 2017. These are games that are scheduled to be released from January to June. Now, just to let you know these are games that I am personally interested in for the particular system that I am discussing. So just because a third party game may not be on this list it may be on another list when I do those particular lists.

Tales of Breseria
I am a huge Tales of .... fan so when a new one comes stateside I usually show my support by picking it up day one. The Tales games are for the most part stand-alone games in the series with a couple having direct links to previous entries. This particular game is said to be one of the darkest in the series as the main character, Velvet Crowe, is on a mission of vengeance. I am interested in seeing how this plays out story wise. Many entries in the Tales series has their dark moments but I don't think any of the stories have b…

Series Review - Voltron Legendary Defender Season 2

Available on Netflix

Synopsis (From IMDB):Four Earth teens - Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and, their leader, Shiro - who become the last line of defense for the galaxy in an intergalactic battle against the evil alien force led by King Zarkon.

Season 2 picks exactly where Season 1 ended, with the paladins and their lions all be scattered to unknown locations. Much of this season deals with the resistance that is forming within the Galra empire and the paladins continuing to form bonds with their lions. The quality of the animation does not drop in the season and neither does the story. There is still so much to like here with this show. Personally, I found the show to be better balanced this season than I did in the first season. Also, I thought the action sequences were better as well. This series has made it a point to get to know the characters outside of the lions and this season was no exception. I liked the time they spent with Keith this season as he is my favorite paladin from the …

Movie Review - xXx Return of Xander Cage

Synopsis (From IMDB):Xander Cage is left for dead after an incident, though he secretly returns to action for a new, tough assignment with his handler Augustus Gibbons.

That's right peeps, apparently, he isn't dead. Vin Diesel returns as Xander Cage in the next installment in the xXx movie franchise. Let's be honest at this point when you go to see an xXx movie you can't go in expecting a lot. These movies, in my opinion, are meant to be fun action movies with ridiculous stunts. If you go into the movie thinking like this then you may have a good time. Which I have to say, I wound up having a pretty decent time. That's not to say that there wasn't any unbelievable foolishness because there was plenty of that, but it wasn't a complete waste to me. The movie feels very much like an extension of the first movie that released way back in 2002. There are a couple of references to that movie but nothing more. From a visual standpoint, the movie retains that look a…

Well that was informative, Nintendo Direct for Fire Emblem

The Direct: Nintendo dropped a lot of information for a 19 minute direct today. I do like the title focused Direct's I think that they are a little bit tighter and this one was no different. Nintendo got straight to the point, so let's do a little breakdown, shall we. Please note that I will include the direct at the end of the post. If you are interested in the mobile game they will tell you the website at the end of the presentation.

Fire Emblem Echoes Shadows of Valentia: The game is basically a remake remaster of the Japan-only title, Fire Emblem Gaiden from 1992. From a visual standpoint it looks great on the 3DS. The game looks a lot like Fire Emblem Fates. It should be a real treat for fans of the Fire Emblem series. The game will have amiibo as well and it releases on May 19, 2017.

Fire Emblem Warriors: In the presentation last week there was a teaser trailer released for this title. Well in the Direct we got a little bit longer trailer as well as a Fall 2017 launch wind…

Thoughts on the Switch Presentation Part 2: The Games

After rewatching the Switch presentation and a lot of the Treehouse Live event I would like to give my thoughts on the games that caught my eye. Overall, I think what Nintendo has come out of the gates saying is that we're still here and we're still giving unique experiences. The games they showed off are a mix of what could be considered casual and what is considered core gaming experiences. I won't be going through every game that they showed but I will leave a link to the Presentation as well as the Treehouse Live event so that you can take a look at what will be coming to the Switch.

This game looks like a lot of fun. When I saw the trailer for it I thought it mixed Wii Sports Boxing with Ready 2 Rumble boxing extremely well. The game uses the Joy Cons in the same way you would have used the Wii Mote and Chuck. The game looks like it will be a lot of fun, especially with friends. They showed some of the character variety and I am digging the variety. Hopefully, we…

Thoughts on the Nintendo Switch Presentation

Note: I won't be talking about the games in this post as I would like to see the presentation that the Treehouse will be hosting before I give my thoughts on what we saw, games wise last night.

Last night Nintendo had a full Switch presentation live from Tokyo. The presentation was held much like a traditional e3 or Tokyo Game Show presentation, which worked just fine for me. Nintendo's President Kimishima opened the proceedings by giving the launch date and the price for the system. Another feature revealed was that there will be a paid online service that will debut in the Fall of 2017. Also discussed was the fact that the Switch is region free. This should be awesome news to a lot of fans who had been clamoring for this for a while. Personally, I could care less as my Japanese is non-existant without subtitles.

The next thing that I found to be interesting was the three distinct modes that the system can be used in TV, Tabletop, and Handheld Mode. I will more than likely be…

Movie Review - One Piece Film GOLD

Synopsis via the Funimation website: The glittering Gran Tesoro, a city of entertainment beyond the laws of government, is a sanctuary for the world's most infamous pirates, Marines, and filthy rich millionaires. Drawn by dreams of hitting the jackpot, Captain Luffy, and his crew sail straight for the gold. But behind the gilded curtains lies a powerful king whose deep pockets and deeper ambitions spell disaster for the Straw Hats and the New World alike.

If you have watched any of the previous One Piece films then you should know how these movies are structured. That isn't a bad thing as the formula clearly works and this movie is no different. From a visual standpoint, the movie looks amazing and does a nice job of mixing CG and hand drawn animation. One Piece has always had a unique look due to Eiichiro Oda's art style and the movies are always able to replicate that to great effect. The character designs are predictably weird and fun, one character, in particular, crac…

Movie Review - True Memoirs of an International Assassin

Streaming now on NetFlix

Movie Review
Synopsis via IMDB: After a publisher changes a writer's debut novel about a deadly assassin from fiction to non-fiction, the author finds himself thrust into the world of his lead character and must take on the role of his character for his own survival.

Let me be 1000% honest with you, this isn't a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but is it an unwatchable mess that's the question. I don't think so, in all honesty. The movie has its flaws but I was still able to laugh at parts of the movie. By all intents and purposes this is a Kevin James movie, so if you have ever seen any of his recent movies then you should know what you are in for. This is one of those films that if it were in a theater I would probably be mad, but I think it's perfect for a streaming service like Netflix. The cast is decent and one of the main reasons why I was laughing was because of Rob Riggle's CIA Agent William Cobb. He and his partner…

First Impressions - Final Fantasy XV

Available on PS4, XBONE, PC (to be released later); version played XBONE, gameplay from PS4 version

15 Hours In
Synopsis (the short version of course): Crown Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum, heir to the Lucian throne goes on a quest to retake his throne and its crystal after it is attacked on the eve of peace negotiations with the empire of Nifelheim.

Noctis is joined by his crownsguard or you can just call them his boys. As they act more like brothers than protectors of the prince. The game starts out a little before the Kingsglaive movie that came out late last year. Noctis is going on a journey to meet Lady Lunafreya as they are to be married. It is then that the crown city is attacked and the game really starts. This is a different type of Final Fantasy game as this game feels more like an action RPG as opposed to the more standard Final Fantasy game. I like this change to the gameplay as fights feel more fluid and are faster, the gameplay reminds me of the Tales series at least speed wi…

Game Recommendations - Freedom Planet

Available on PC, PS4, and Nintendo Wii U; version played Wii U

The Game
Freedom Planet is an independent game from developer Galaxy Trail and can be best described as the spiritual successor to the 16bit era Sonic the Hedgehog series. The game itself is broken up into two parts: Story Mode and Classic Mode. Classic Mode lets players play level after level with no story to get in the way and story mode is self-explanatory. I found the story to actually be fun. The characters to me are all likable and that's what helps the story as I found it to be both cheesy (in a good way) and comical all at the same time. I like that the developers kept it looking like a retro game. It gives the title a certain charm and I am thankful for that. If you are a fan of retro action games or old school Sonic games, this game should be in your library. I promise it will scratch that itch and if you're like me is a nice shout out to the old school.

Game Play
The game is classified as an action game an…

A Gamer's Thoughts - Nier Automata Demo

Available on PS4

The Demo
Okay, so if you know me and follow this blog you know I am a fan of Platinum Studios. Those guys just know how to make an action game and I find their games to be fun and awesome. I know that they are kind of niche game developer but they put out quality work and I honestly don't know why their games don't sell a hell of a lot more. One of their games that will be releasing this year is Nier Automata. The demo is fun and it's not hard to get the hang of the controls. There isn't much story to go on, the objective of the demo is to investigate the area and take down giant robotic douchebag boss. Simple enough in my opinion. Personally, the demo plays like Bayonetta with a couple of differences. On the plus side, I found the fight mechanics to work well and the combos to be fluid. The enemy swarms weren't as much of a problem once I got used to the flow of battle. For a demo, it wasn't bad I will say though that I do plan on playing it ag…

Series Review - TrollHunters

Season 1 Available on NetFlix

The Season
Don't worry as always this review is spoiler-free. The IMDB synopsis is as follows: based on the book by Guillermo del Toro, Trollhunters tell the story of friends who unearth a mystery underneath their hometown. A little short but for the most part accurate. The season, like most shows on Netflix, is broken up into two parts essentially. The first thirteen episodes tackle one villain and particular storyline and the back half tackles a completely different villain and storyline. For the most part, this is one series where I thought both stories flowed naturally and didn't hurt the season like in some Netflix originals that I have enjoyed. The animation is very well done. Colors are bright, especially in Troll Market where the good trolls live and where a large portion of the season takes place. Each episode runs between 23 and 25 minutes, so its standard for a television show. The voice acting is great as this show has some great actors…
