First Impressions - RWBY Grimm Eclipse

Available on XBONE, PS4, and PC; version played XBONE

The Game
Based on the RWBY animated series from Rooster Teeth, this game follows Teams RWBY and JNPR (JNPR being available only through DLC) as they try to get to the bottom of strange happenings around the Emerald Forest. The game takes place between Volumes 2 and 3 of the series and is a 4 player hack-n-slash game. For fans of the series, everything that you love is there. Story wise I think the game works as it does feel like an extension of the series. The characters feel unique and retain their characteristics from the series. Honestly, I think this will be fun for fans of the show and they will be able to get the most out of the game.

The GamePlay
It is a hack-n-slash in the vein of the old Gauntlet series. That being said it suffers from some of the problems that all hack-n-slash games suffer from. The game does get repetitive and while there are different difficulty modes to play the game on there is no real strategy to defeat the Grimm. There are some light RPG elements to the game. You can spend points to gain boosts and extra bars for life and abilities.
All of which are standard fare for the genre. Also, its worth noting that the level design while not atrocious can seem bland from time to time. After a while, all of the areas started to look and feel the same to me.

Final Thoughts
It's important to note that this is an indie game and not a full console release game. Even still it is on the repetitive side and while I am a huge fan of the series, I honestly, think that this game is just okay. If you have four friends the co-op can be fun ala Gauntlet but if you are going through the game by yourself it may get old. I would love to see the game grow as I do see potential but if there is another title maybe they should go the full on RPG route instead of hack-n-slash. Have you played the game? What did you think about the game? Let me know in the comments below and as always thanks for reading.
