Impressions NBA Playgrounds

Available on PS4, XBONE, Nintendo Switch, and PC

Initial Thoughts
I have, to be honest, I never understood why the arcade sports games went away. I understand that there are fans that want their realism but sometimes you just feel the need to shoot an electrified three-pointer from half court. Yes, people NBA Playgrounds scratches that NBA Jam itch, well kind of, for the most part. The game is a 2 on 2 arcade game that uses complete ridiculousness to show gamers a good time. If you have played NBA Jam back in the 90's and even the most recent version that came out a few years ago then you know what to expect. The art style is a little weird but to me, it works in the context of the game. It gives the title a unique look. Something fresh and a little cartoony that really works when pulling off some of the crazy stunts that are in the game. As far as players in the game, each team has a selected number of roster spots and the way you unlock characters is by opening card packs. Leveli…

ARMs Global TestPunch Impressions

Initial Impressions
That was fun, I'm not even gonna lie. Much like Splatoon Nintendo decided to give its fans a first look at their new IP ARMs via a special demo called TestPunch. The first TestPunch weekend has passed and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. Nintendo has sold me on this game so I will be picking this one up in June when it releases. I won't go into detail because there is a Direct that you can watch if you wish to know more about the game in general. I will say that even with the limited amount of things that we could do in the demo it leaves me wanting more and looking forward to some of the other modes in the game. The modes that I played were a regular 1 v 1 fight, 2 v 2 fight, every fighter for themselves, and V-Ball. A one on one is self-explanatory as this is common in every fighting game known to man. The two on two matches were kind of weird because of how they are setup. Whoever you are partnered up with has a string between you and your part…

Movie Review - Pirates of the Caribbean 5 (yep Cap'n Jack is back)

Synopsis (from IMDB): Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea...including him. Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Well, the Captain is back for another go in the Caribbean. If you have watched any of the other movies in this series then you have a pretty good idea of what to expect by now. The things that stand out to me about this particular installment is the effects. I liked them a lot in this film. Well mostly, I liked them there is an effect that I thought was weird looking but for the most part, I liked the effects and the visuals. The Pirates series always has some crazy stunts but the one that opens out the movie is especially ridiculous. The …

A Gamer's Thoughts - Metroid on the Switch

So I recently wrapped the story in the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, I still have a few side quests and shrines to wrap up but I decided I'll save that for later while I wait for that DLC to drop. While playing though I started to think about what other IP's that Nintendo has that could possibly benefit from an open world type of game. The first game series that sprang to mind was Metroid.

Over the years, Metroid has seen its game formula tinkered with in different ways. From 8 and 16-bit side scrolling action games to first person action adventure games to a 2.5D hybrid. Some of them were met with praise while others not so much. What would I like to see in a new Metroid title? Funny you should ask.

Story-wise Before any of you think Prime anything, STOOOOPPPPPP!!!!! Not going there, in my opinion, the Prime series ended with Metroid Prime 3 Corruption (awesome game by the way). For this game, the story should be brand new. On a personal level, I would love to see some…

Thoughts on the ARMs Direct

**I was on vacation when the Direct dropped please accept my apologies for the lateness.

I finally got a chance to see the ARMs direct and I liked the information that was delivered during the presentation. There was a lot that Nintendo shared. We got to see all ten fighters as well as a little background on each one. There were also new fighters that were revealed during the presentation. I am not going to go into each one of them here but let's just say that it's nice to see Nintendo's new IP looking better and better. From a visual standpoint, I am looking forward to seeing all of the different fighting arenas and whatever else Nintendo has cooked up for this title. Also, revealed during the Direct were a number of different modes as well as ARMs mods that players can use to customize their fighter. There will also be online with ranked matches for those who wish to play competitively. One of the modes revealed during the presentation that caught my eye was a te…

Movie Review - King Arthur Legend of the Sword (or King Arthur and the Knights of Anarchy)

Synopsis (From IMDB):  Robbed of his birthright, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy - whether he likes it or not.

Well, let's start with what I liked about the movie. Visually, the movie looks great especially the opening. One thing that I like about a Guy Ritchie movie is that he does a good job with the camera and making the visuals stand out. I like Charlie Hunnam's portrayal of Arthur, I have never seen Arthur portrayed this way and it was different and awesome all at the same time. Jude Law wasn't bad in the movie either, and I liked his portrayal of Vortigern for the most of the movie. Lastly, the magic effects were pretty cool to see on the screen. However, let me warn you if you have a problem with snakes than the last act of this movie may just creep you all the way out.

Now that I have got the good out of the way, let's get into some of the bad. T…

A Gamer's Thoughts - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Available on the Nintendo Switch

The Game
Let me go on and get this out of the way now. Yes, I bought this game. Yes, I bought it because of Battle Mode. Now that that's out of the way let's get into this shall we. This is a basically a "Definitive" edition of the Wii U game. The game comes with all the DLC and characters that were in that game along with the revamped Battle Mode. Also joining the festivities this time around is Inkling Boy and Girl from Splatoon complete with their own track (in Battle Mode). Graphically, I won't lie that I couldn't really tell a difference until I got to Bowser's Castle. That's when I noticed that the graphics were better and visually everything looked sharper and more vibrant. As far as the gameplay is concerned it is the same as it was on the Wii U. I have heard rumors that the whole "fire hopping" glitch has been fixed. I'm sure some people will take issue with that for some reason or another. The mu…

Game Review - The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild

Available on the Nintendo Switch and Wii U; version played Switch

Open Air Hyrule Version
Breath of the Wild is the latest game in the Legend of Zelda franchise and it's a big one. The game is about as open world as open world gets and it is something that fans of the series have been asking for, for a while now. This isn't like any other game in the series as there is a true sense of freedom to everything that you do in the game. Players can play in any way they choose as well. For example, I usually stock up on hearts as I like to rush headlong into fights. If you like to take a different approach you can max out your stamina gauge that will allow you to run longer, climb longer, glide longer, etc. With the expanded Hyrule landscape there are plenty of secrets scattered across each section. On the subject of landscapes, the map in this game is ridiculous. Let's just say there are horses in this game for a reason. The art style in the game is just like what was in Skyward …

Movie Review - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Synopsis (from IMDB): Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures across the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand.

Picking up right where they left off, this new movie starts with the Guardians hired to do a job for Ayesha of the Sovereign. Due to the actions of everyone's favorite Raccoon, the Guardians are soon on the run. Outnumbered with their ship badly damaged they land on a nearby planet where they are greeted by none other than Ego, Peter's long lost father. There is a lot that fans of the first movie are going to like in this new feature. The banter and the character interactions are still great and there are some truly funny moments in the film. Visually, the movie loo…

Finally got a trailer for The Defenders

Marvel and NetFlix finally decided to release the first full trailer for their team-up series The Defenders earlier this week. If you don't know or have been following the Marvel/NetFlix series of heroes, here's the short version. The Defenders will bring together Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist in order to defend New York from a threat. Much like Marvel has done cinematically with the Avengers the NetFlix shows have followed the same formula of introducing each of the characters in their own series before bringing them together for this summer's miniseries.

The trailer does a great job of setting up how the characters all meet up. Outside of Jessica and Luke the other characters have not met each other yet and it was cool to see Matt meet Jessica and Danny meet Luke. The Luke and Danny interaction in the trailer is awesome to see as most comic book fans know that the two are known for Heroes for Hire. Here's hoping that Marvel decides to do somethi…

Character Spotlight - Breath of the Wild's Princess Zelda

The newest game in the Legend of Zelda series has a lot of things going for it, from its epic landscape to its art style and soundtrack. One of the best parts of the game is the Captured Memories that serve as cutscenes but more importantly, they tell Breath of the Wild's story (or at least a substantial portion of it). These memories chronicle Link's memories of Zelda and their time together before the tragic events of the game.

Personally, I believe that this is the most character development we have seen with Princess Zelda. Her character arc is deep and we get to see a lot of different layers that we honestly haven't seen in any of the previous entries in the series. It's important to note that this incarnation of the Princess is not a fighter in the typical sense of the word. She does, however, spend her time doing research and other scholarly pursuits. This brings her into conflict with her father, the King as it is stated at points that her power of sealing is …

Movie Review - Teen Titans The Judas Contract

Synopsis (from IMDB):  Tara Markov is a girl with power over earth and stone; she also is more than what she seems. Is the newest Teen Titan an ally or a threat? And what are the mercenary Deathstroke's plans for the team?

Just to be honest DC and WB are in a league of their own when it comes to their animated projects. In all honesty, I have not read the original comic, The Judas Contract, so I am coming into this with nothing to reference. I will say that the movie kind of parallels the old Teen Titans cartoon that was on Cartoon Network back in the early 2000's. Terra is introduced in this movie as well as Brother Blood. Once again the voice cast is great and does an awesome job. The animation looks great and looks like a continuation of Teen Titans vs Justice League. The roster is pretty much the same with the added addition of Terra, the animators do a good job on her power set and the character does have a good deal of trauma that bleeds into her powers. The story in and…
