Movie Review - Pirates of the Caribbean 5 (yep Cap'n Jack is back)

Synopsis (from IMDB): Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea...including him. Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Well, the Captain is back for another go in the Caribbean. If you have watched any of the other movies in this series then you have a pretty good idea of what to expect by now. The things that stand out to me about this particular installment is the effects. I liked them a lot in this film. Well mostly, I liked them there is an effect that I thought was weird looking but for the most part, I liked the effects and the visuals. The Pirates series always has some crazy stunts but the one that opens out the movie is especially ridiculous. The thing that saves it for me is all the comedy that surrounds the entire sequence. There is also a pretty cool sequence in the movie involving a Guillotine that I thought was done well too. The characters in the story are not bad. Nobody is overbearing and it feels like they are having fun in their respective roles. Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom show up in this movie though only in glorified cameos. Javier Bardem's Captain Salazar is a different kind of villain than most of the villains in the Pirates movies. He pretty much hates all pirates and was butchering them way before Jack incurred his wrath. The flashback sequence that details that is actually one of my favorite parts of the movie. There are plenty of comedic scenes and sequences in the movie that I got some good laughs in, I think for the most part the comedy works in this movie.

Remember how I said I mostly liked the visuals in this movie. Well here's why I said mostly, certain effects on Captain Salazar's crew just look weird. I know a couple of the effects were to make it seem as if they were still in the water but it just doesn't look right at points. Also, anytime they did the whole run on water thing, it just looked bad to me. Another thing that I didn't like about this movie is that there is hardly swashbuckling in it and one of the main scenes where this would have been shown was really hard to see as it was a night scene and both ships were pitch black. The editing during those scenes was pretty choppy too.

For Parents
The movie is rated PG-13. Personally, if they have watched any of the other movies they can watch this one as it falls in line with the rest of the series. The runtime is a little over two hours and the movie is paced very well. Most of the other films in this series were two and a half hours long and this one feels right with the shortened runtime.

The Verdict
I give this a MATINEE. I liked it and thought that it was a fun movie. It doesn't run too long either which is a plus in my book. There is also a stinger at the end of the movie that kind of sets up another movie. Honestly, I hope it does as I would love to see one final movie with the three original stars in it together. Have you seen the movie? What do you think? Do you think there will be another one? Let me know what you think in the comments and as always thanks for reading.
