Film Review - Message from the King

Available on NetFlix

Synopsis (from IMDB): After suddenly losing all contact with his younger sister, Jacob King arrives in LA determined to track her down. Trying to piece together her last known movements, King finds unsettling evidence of a life gone off the rails - drugs, sex, and secrets in the sleazy underbelly of the City of Angels. Undeterred by warnings to go home, King proves more than a match for the violence he is confronted with as he relentlessly pursues the truth about what happened to his sister.

Netflix has some interesting movies in its catalog. I decided to check this one out as I am a fan of a lot of the actors in this film. The film has a gritty tone to it and a lot of mature themes. What starts as a kind of fish out of water movie turns into a full on revenge thriller about half way through it. This isn't a bad thing as they show you the reason why the film goes that way. There are some truly effed up things that happen in this movie. Visually, the movie has a…

Film Review - The Hitman's Bodyguard (now I want to see a Deadpool/Nick fury team up movie)

Synopsis from IMDB:  The world's top bodyguard gets a new client, a hit man who must testify at the International Court of Justice. They must put aside their differences and work together to make it to the trial on time.

This movie survives off of the banter and chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Sam Jackson. That's not necessarily a bad thing as the movie has some truly funny moments. The story revolves around Reynolds character having to transport Jackson's to the World Court in Hague. They are being tracked by mercenaries trying to keep Jackson's character from testifying. One of my favorite characters in the movie is Salma Hayek who plays Jackson's wife. Every time she came onscreen I was laughing at the stuff she was saying and doing. The comedy worked with this movie and I feel that it is the strong point of the movie. The action scenes weren't bad they were just sequences that I have seen before and done better. Visually, the movie is like your standard…

First Impressions - Fate Extella The Umbral Star

Available on Nintendo Switch

The Game
This is a Musou game that takes place in the Fate series. The Fate series revolves around different heroes and legends from across time being summoned to do battle at the behest of mages for the Holy Grail. The series has light novels as well as anime and other forms of media. This is the first time we are getting a game here in the USA. I think that this game is basically for fans of the series as the story is brand new and is written by the author. While you may notice many of the characters from the anime, some of them have different names and motivations. This game actually starts after the Holy Grail has been won. Your character is settling into your new role when all hell breaks loose. Visually, I can't lie the game looks like a PS2 game in certain areas. There is also a lot of text in the game and the game is in Japanese with subtitles. While the visuals are a little disappointing, if you are a fan of the Musou genre I think it is okay, …

TV Series Review - Marvel's The Defenders

Available on NetFlix

Synopsis (from IMDB): Marvel's The Defenders follows, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist. A quartet of singular heroes with one common goal - to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary heroes, each with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.

Now that was fun. Much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Netflix side of programming finally released their culmination effort, The Defenders. There is a lot to like here and if you have been following along with all four shows this one is icing on the cake. The action is good, the story is interesting and follows what happened in Daredevil Season 2 and Iron Fist Season 1, and the acting is great. Seeing Luke Cage and Danny Rand team up for the first time was a comic fan's dream. This series also did a lot of little seed droppings for Heroes for Hire. I mean, Marvel come on let's get that one done. You know you want to do it t…

Film Review - Fairy Tail Dragon Cry

Synopsis: Natsu and his friends travel to the island kingdom of Stella to retrieve an artifact that was stolen from the kingdom of Fiore and stop the world from being destroyed.

So I got lucky as the Alamo Drafthouse in my area had a screening of the movie and I was able to get a ticket. This is the second movie in the Fairy Tail universe. This movie is going to be a little bit weird to watch if you haven't read the manga as the anime is currently on hiatus. The anime is due to come back soon to animate the last arc of the manga and this story takes place in that time period. From an animation standpoint, the movie looks great. The action is fluid and the artwork is good, especially in certain parts of the movie when they reach the island of Stella where most of the film takes place.  If you are a fan of Fairy Tail there is a good amount of action and comedy in the movie. There is also fan service but I found most of it to be funny some people may not but it's nothing that was…

TV Review - Voltron Season 3

Available on Netflix

Season 3 Thoughts
Okay, that was friggin short. Short but oh so good. If you have been following the Netflix series then you already know what to expect, great action, cool visuals, and an awesome story. This season picks up right where Season 2 left off. The paladins are without Shiro, Prince Lotor has been summoned since Zarkon is unconscious, and the universe has a small moment of peace. This season has a lot of nice little throwbacks to the original show from the 80's. We finally get the paladins as we know them from the 80's show with Keith as the leader. There is also an episode that has Sven in it complete with accent. I thought that was pretty cool of them to add him in that episode. I also thought that Lotor was done very well. I was a little worried about how he was going to be portrayed but any reservations I had were quickly gone as we got a clear look at what kind of character he is throughout this season. It will be interesting going forward w…

Film Review - The Dark Tower

**Disclaimer: I have not read any of the books in this series. People who have read the books may have a different viewpoint of this movie from mine.

Synopsis (from IMDB): The last gunslinger, Roland Deschain, has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O'Dim, also known as the Man In Black, determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.

I am not going to lie, I enjoyed this film. From my understanding, there is a lot that was left out of the books but as someone who has not read the books, the movie told a story that I could follow. I will say this that the movie does start off a little slow but it does pick up when the Gunslinger shows up. As far as Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba are concerned, I thought they were great in their roles. The Man in Black is channeling Killgrave as some…
