First Impressions - Pankapu

Available on PS4, XBONE, Switch, & PC

One thing is very clear when this game starts and that is the artwork. Visually, the game has a style all its own. The game itself is like a children's story. In fact, the beginning of the game starts with a child having a nightmare and their father coming in to read the story. From there the game begins and it is really a straightforward game. From an artistic standpoint the game is beautiful and even though some of the villains look simple there is enough variety to keep things interesting. The environments are well done in my opinion and they all hold secrets. The game encourages replay of levels to find hidden rooms and other things laying about on a particular stage. There is never a dull moment in this one.

From a gameplay perspective, the game reminds me a bit of Dust An Elysian Tale. The game plays like an action platformer. Pankapu has different means by which he can fight. Some of which can be found in the game, these abilities allow you to defeat enemies you previously could not. In that way, this game reminds of the old side-scrolling beat'em ups from back in the 90s. Don't let the simple controls fool you this game can get challenging at times. I wouldn't say that there is a drastic spike but it can take a few times to get past a certain part. Oh and you will more than likely die a lot, the good news is that you respawn at your last checkpoint so that isn't too frustrating. In the trailer, you will notice that there is a swordsman, bowman, and mage well at the time of this post I haven't unlocked them yet so I have no idea how they play. Like I stated earlier there are a lot of places that you will not be able to get to so coming back with new powers will more than likely be needed. I can say that for completionists I think this game won't disappoint as there are a lot of hidden areas with collectibles to find.

Final Thoughts
So far I am finding the game to be a lot of fun. I like the simplicity of it and the challenge as well. I am looking forward to finishing this one and giving my full review. As it stands now this game is one of my favorite indie titles this year. Have you played Pankapu? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below and as always thanks for reading.
