First Impressions - Super Mario Odyssey

Available on the Nintendo Switch

Thoughts on the Game So Far
I'm going to be completely honest with you here, I am not the biggest Mario fan. When it comes to Nintendo characters my favorite character/series in Link and the Legend of Zelda. That's not to say that the Mario games aren't awesome but just to let you know a little about me. After playing about half of the latest in Mario adventure this game is probably going to go down as a surefire classic and probably the best if not one of the best in the Mario series. Bowser is back to his old tricks except this time not only has he kidnapped Princess Peach he's actually forcing her to marry him. Yeah, I know certain people who shall not be named are going to cry foul over that and they have that right. I think the story is not to be taken seriously in any form but that's just me. Visually, the game is just plain gorgeous. Every environment and area I have been to is unique and just pops with personality. There are secrets around every corner and I am pretty sure that completionists will have their hands full with this one. I like the new characters in the game especially The Broodals, Bowser's new henchmen. I think they are hilarious and that's another thing I like about the story of the game and that is the fact that it's really funny. One of my favorite recurring jokes is how everybody keeps commenting on how tacky Bowser is for his wedding announcement posters. Yes, people, it is that tacky in game. I also love the music in this game. I found myself humming along to some of the music while playing. Really wish Nintendo had released a soundtrack for this one.

Gameplay
With every Mario game ever created there has always been some new mechanic driving the gameplay. In this game its Cappy. Your cap based sidekick is along for the ride to help save his sister whom Bowser has also kidnapped. Cappy is used in a lot of different ways and I think that they do a good job of making his use fluid and easy to do. The one mechanic though that is fun to use is the capture mechanic. Cappy can "capture" most beings in the game and allow Mario to possess them. This can come in handy in boss battles as well as help to figure out puzzles. You saw this in the trailer but there really is nothing like capturing a T-Rex and going on a rampage. In most levels, you will come across warp pipes where the game will turn into an 8-bit mini level. Those are fun and add to the level variety, as they usually coincide with the theme of the level. There is the mandatory collecting part of the game with the Power Moons. Some people like them, some people don't, in all honesty, I am truly undecided. They are necessary as each level contains a certain amount that is needed to power your ship but like the Kokiri seeds in Breath of the Wild, there are 999 Power Moons in this game. To find them all is going to be a bit time draining, so have fun with that if that's your thing.

Overall
Not gonna lie, I think this game is a lot of fun. Is it my personal Game of the Year, no but it does deserve to be up there and I haven't even finished the game yet. The level design, the music, and just the amount of collectibles and things you can do in this game is awesome. Not to mention I do like the photo mechanic as I have made a couple of cell phone backgrounds. If I had one complaint it would be this, why can't Luigi get any love. I mean seriously, I'm a little brother myself and would love for my boy Luigi to be in the game, but that's just me. In a year where the Switch has a lot of games, this one should be in the gaming library, in my humble opinion. Have you picked up the game? What are your thoughts on it so far? Let's talk about it in the comments and as always thanks for reading.
