Impressions - Marvel's Runaways Episodes 1 - 3

Available on Hulu

Synopsis (from IMDB): Follows a group of six teenagers - Nico Minoru, Karolina Dean, Molly Hernandez, Chase Stein, Gertrude Yorkes, and Alex Wilder - who discover that their parents are members of a super-villain cabal called The Pride. After deciding that they are no longer safe in their own homes, the kids go on the run. In the midst of hiding from their elders, the teens learn about themselves and become a family of their own.

Normally, I do a review at the end of the season but Hulu does things a little differently than Netflix in regards to their original programming. So I decided that I will take a look at the sets of episodes instead of doing a full-on review at the end of the season. I will admit that I have never read the Runaways comic, although I do know some of the characters do to their interactions in the Marvel Universe with the books that I do follow. This show is interesting because one of the characters is an actual mutant in the comics and while they haven't addressed that yet I am wondering how Marvel is going to handle that one. As for the show itself I like the characters in it, I think that they work even though at first, I thought it was a little too teen angsty for my tastes. The second and third episodes had me intrigued. I did do a little research on the comic for this show and while some of the more fantastical elements have been either taken out or changed completely I think it works for the story they are trying to tell. Each character is unique and given problems that I think most people can relate to especially when it comes to their relationships with their parents. The parents are all good actors and they do a good job especially the actor that plays Alex's dad. There isn't a lot of CG in the first three episodes but what is, is pretty good and yes we get to see the velociraptor.

If there is anything that I had an issue with is probably the teen angst. Maybe it's just me but some of it was annoying because I felt that it went on a little long, especially in the first episode. By the second episode, it got better but it still felt like it was dragging a little bit. Through these first three episodes, I would say that pacing is the big issue for me. Here's hoping that it picks up the rest of the season.

For Parents
It's a pretty decent show and is TV-14. It's not like the Marvel Netflix shows which deal with adult themes this show deals with teen themes. There are some cool shots of action but it's not heavy on the action especially in the episodes that are available. Also, there is a little bit of language but nothing vulgar. Honestly, I think everybody can watch this one and it is just fine. The runtime for the episodes is standard for hour-long television, between 45 - 50 minutes.

Thoughts So Far
Even with the pacing issues, I think its pretty good so far. I am enjoying the chemistry with the cast and the powers that they have shown with certain characters they have done well. If you have a Hulu account I would suggest checking it out. If you are a fan of superhero shows but you want one you can watch with the kids this one is a good one to try and see if you like it. Have you seen the first three episodes of Runaways? What do you think about it so far? Let's talk about it in the comments and as always thanks for reading.
