First Impressions - Sonic Forces

Available on Nintendo Switch, XBONE, PS4

Thoughts Overall
Contrary to popular belief, I don't think this game is as bad as people think. Normally, with the Sonic franchise the fans are stuck in two camps, the original 2D Sonic games and the 3D Sonic games. To be honest the 3D games have had more ups and downs than some people would care to admit. This game, however, is a mix of the 2D and 3D gameplay that has been showing up since Sonic Colors on the Wii, as a matter of fact, the team behind this game is comprised of members of both Colors and Generations. The story behind this game is that Eggman has finally found a way to take over the world. The game opens with Sonic being defeated and when the game opens back up its some time later. This is where I think some people have a major issue with the game, at this point the player creates there own avatar to play with in the game. Now you won't play the whole game as your character but there are missions in the game in which you will play as your character. The rest of the story's plot revolves around taking the planet back from Eggman and his forces. Your standard Sonic adventure if I am being honest. There are some sections where you play as Sonic from the 90's and those stages are pretty fun overall. To me, the game looks great just like the usual Sonic titles look. There is a sense of familiarity in this game especially when it comes to the level design.

As far as the game is concerned it plays a lot like Colors with an obvious visual upgrade. There are a lot of throwbacks to classic Sonic stages. For example, Green Hill and Casino Run are here and they are a ton of fun to play. I find the gameplay to be fluid and can feel fast at points. However, it is important to note that there are points in each stage where you have to stop and wait which, in all honesty, has been around since Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast. There is one major problem that I have with the gameplay and that is Sonic's signature homing attack. At times it can be difficult to pull off especially in certain boss battles and in the Mystic Jungle stage. Other than that I found the game to be just like the other 3D Sonic titles. Depending on how you feel that can be a good thing or a bad thing. I will say this that I do like that they added the Shadow side story as I think it fits well with the story plus Shadow is my favorite character from the franchise.

Final Impressions
I honestly don't think that this game is bad. Let me just say this that I am also not a Sonic fanboy. I am a fan but the series is far from my favorite or even in my top five. That being said I do think that people are being a little hard on it. I like that Sonic Team has tried new things whether they work or not. I enjoyed Sonic Lost World a lot and I think if people play this one they will find something to enjoy as well. Not to mention that the soundtrack is pretty good especially Infinite's Theme. Have you played Sonic Forces yet? What do you think? Let's talk about it in the comments and as always thanks for reading.
