Black Lightning 1st Episode Thoughts

Tuesdays at 9pm on the CW

I watched the first episode of Black Lightning and I just wanted to give a few of my thoughts on it after one episode. I still plan on doing a full review once the season is done and don't worry this will be spoiler free. I will admit that I don't know much about the character as I am mostly a Marvel comics guy. That being said I have to say that I am feeling this show much like I did with the Luke Cage show on Netflix. I think that Cress Williams does an excellent job as Jefferson Pierce. I like that the show starts you off with him already being retired and having left the superhero life behind for the sake of his family. It's not that he doesn't want his powers on he feels like he's cursed, he just wants his family back. One of the themes of the episode and of the show is that every choice has a consequence. You see it constantly throughout the episode whether it is with his daughters or with him. Some people may not like this but this show deals heavily with issues that are prevalent within the black community. This does involve crooked/overzealous cops. My hope is that people don't write this show off because they talk about it and show it in a real way. The episode also deals with gang life and shows two very different people trying to ultimately do the same thing but have very different ways of going about reaching that goal. I liked the music in the episode. They did a mix of old-school soul and hip-hop and it works. One of the things that you will notice immediately is that this show is different from the other CW DC shows and I see now why they probably won't be crossing over anytime soon. The tone is just way too different than the rest of the "Arrowverse". If there is anything that I had a problem with is the main villain of the season and the villain of the episode. Tobias Whale (villain for the season) I don't find him very threatening at this point, he's just violent to me. Will (the villain of the episode) is just overacting and he really doesn't feel like a threat and maybe that's how he was told to play it, I don't know.  Overall, I have to say I enjoyed it and I am geeked to see what will be happening in the coming weeks. Have you had a chance to check out the first episode? Let me know what you thought in the comments below and as always thanks for reading.
