Film Review - Godzilla Monster Planet Pt. 1

Available on NetFlix

Synopsis (from IMDB):  Years into the future and the human race has been defeated several times by the new ruling force of the planet: "Kaijus". And the ruler of that force is Godzilla, King of the Monsters. Humanity is in such defeat, plans to leave the planet have been made, and several people have been chosen to look at a new planet to see if it is inhabitable. Realizing it is not though, the human race resorts to plan B: to defeat Godzilla and take back their planet.

This movie plays out like a straight up revenge flick and you know what there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. The movie does a good job with the setup of what happened to the world and why the population left earth. From a story standpoint, the movie does a great job of showing the desperation of the characters. Showing how some characters went crazy from being in space too long and how others had given up hope. I think that one of the best aspects of this movie is that in and of itself, showing the mindset of the main characters and how it spurs them to action or inaction depending on their mindset. I liked the visuals of the movie. I know cel shade/CG hybrid films is usually up and down but I think for this movie it works because of the nature of the action and how much the sci-fi elements play a part in this movie. The animation is dubbed in English and I feel that the voice actors did a great job. I like the music that is in the movie as well as the art direction and design of the creatures. I absolutely loved the ending as it set up what's to come in the next movie and left me with a few questions about certain characters motives.

There are a couple of things that I did not like about the movie. Well not really hated but things I think they could have done better. First, I would have liked to see Godzilla fight some of the other kaijus, that was at the beginning of the film. Another issue I found with this movie is that it feels a little dragged out in places. I feel like this is the case to get the viewer to see the various points of view different characters have but it doesn't do the movie any favors. I also would have liked to know a little more about the aliens in the movie. Hopefully, the next film will delve into that and how the kaijus just showed up out of nowhere.

For Parents
This movie is rated TV-14, basically its PG-13. There is a lot of action and violence in the movie. There is also a sequence where there is a monster attack and a couple of characters get bitten. There isn't any real gore in the movie and there is a little bit of language but nothing outrageous. The movie has a short runtime of an hour and twenty-eight minutes and for the most part, it moves at a good pace. There is a post-credits stinger so be sure to stick around (or fast forward) through the credits.

Final Thoughts
I enjoyed this movie and gave it a 5 out 5 Stars on Netflix. I loved the animation and story. I also liked how it set up the second movie that is coming out this year. Also, that ending was amazing and got me hyped up for real. Have you seen Godzilla Monster Planet? What do you think about it? Let's talk about it in the comments and as always thanks for watching.
