TV Review - Altered Carbon Season 1

Available on NetFlix

Synopsis (from IMDB): Set in a future where consciousness is digitized and stored, a prisoner returns to life in a new body and must solve a mind-bending murder to win his freedom.

So I tend to like sci-fi action thrillers and this show is a very interesting viewing experience for me. I'm getting better with my binging habits so that's why it has taken so long for me to do this review. As far as the acting is concerned I thought that it was good. If you watch a lot of sci-fi there are a few actors you will recognize and in all honesty, I think they did a good job here. The special effects are great and for the most part look good in the world that is set up. The story itself starts off kind of slow but does pick up and I was thoroughly enjoying the mysteries that were going on throughout the season. Admittedly I am not the biggest Joel Kinnaman fan but honestly, he wasn't bad in this show. There is also a lot of action and violence in this show. From a visual standpoint, I enjoyed the action and the choreography. The is one sequence that takes place in a zero-g fight chamber that I thought was done pretty well. The themes throughout the season will probably make you think about life and what it means to live. There are a couple of episodes in particular where that theme is at the forefront and I thought that the show did a good job of showing the different viewpoints and sides of the argument.

There are a few things that I think this show does that goes a little overboard. I am an adult so this doesn't bother me too much but some people can't really handle it but there is a lot of nudity in this show. I mean full frontal the whole nine yards. Some scenes I don't think were necessary they just did it to do it. It is pretty equal in the amounts male and female nudity but it is a lot. There are gory parts to some of the action and I think some of those scenes went a little too far. I think some of this was pure shock value but I am a fan of Game of Thrones and Spartacus, so that shock value trope doesn't really work on me. The other thing I found to be a little odd is some of the shots when they go to the 1% or the Meth as they call them in the show. In the show, they live above the clouds and something about some of those shots just seemed a little off to me.

For Parents
This show is rated TV-MA. This ain't for the little ones. There is a lot of violence, sex, nudity, and a little drug usage in the show. The episodes have a fairly standard runtime, they last between 45 - 58 minutes. There is one episode that goes over an hour. There are only 10 episodes in this season.

Final Thoughts
I wound up enjoying it overall. The last two episodes were really intriguing to me as the mystery elements were deepening and I was trying to figure out who did what. I was completely wrong by the way which I was glad for. I think the ending made sense and if this show gets a second season I would watch it. I gave this one a 4 out of 5 stars. Have you seen Altered Carbon? What did you think of the show? Let's talk about it in the comments and as always thanks for reading.
