First Impressions - Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds Overdrive

The version played Nintendo Switch

Initial Thoughts
So Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds Overdrive is a side-scrolling beat'em up.  Seeing as how I am a fan of side-scrollers I decided to give this game a go.  I never played the original and from what I understand this game is a spinoff of that title. The game is a four-player co-op and the characters are all chibi form. One thing about this game is that it has a lot of Japanese tropes that I like from the character design to there interactions with enemies, it is all pretty fun. Each of the characters is unique and have different play aspects. Personally, I like rolling with Yuzuha, obligatory ninja character, she plays fast and I like her moveset. The villains are as unique as the characters and some just look plain crazy.  I also like the environments in this game as every level feels fresh and completely different from the previous level. As far as the design of the game is concerned I like it.

Gameplay/Sound
So this game is in Japanese with subtitles and has a habit of having a lot of text before the stage starts. As far as the gameplay is concerned its basic side-scrolling mayhem. There are a lot of enemies on the screen at one time and most are pretty easy to get through. There are some enemies that are tougher than the cannon fodder ones and the game also has a 2 plane format which means some enemies appear on the 2nd plane and you will be switching between the two planes often. The game also has an upgrade component. After every stage, you will get an accumulation of points that you can spend to upgrade moves and health etc.

Final Impressions
I think that the game is pretty fun. The story is very straightforward and its to be expected in my opinion as it is a side-scroller. The characters and villains are unique and the game doesn't feel boring to me as there is enough variety and the bosses can be very challenging. Have you played Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds Overdrive? What do you think of the game? Let's talk about it in the comments and as always thanks for reading.
