Film Review: Solo A Star Wars Story (Spoiler Free of Course)
Synopsis (from IMDB): During an adventure into the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future copilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion.
Okay just to be clear, I don't see where all the haterade is coming from honestly. I don't know what people were expecting from this film but me, personally, I was expecting some sort of heist film set in the Star Wars universe. I don't know if there was a large outcry for a Solo movie but this movie wasn't that bad and told a decent story in my opinion. Just like in Rogue One, this film deals with the darker side of the Empire, essentially the lawless side. Crime Syndicates, gangsters, smugglers, hustlers, these are the character types that fill this story. From a visual standpoint, I thought that the film took its cues from Rogue One a little in the fact that they show the ugly side of the empire. That's one of the things that I like is the practical effects in this film. It just makes the movie feel more real, in my opinion. The CG isn't bad either but the film doesn't seem saturated in it and I think that works to its favor. The actors are pretty good. The standouts to me being Han, Qi'ra, Lando, Beckett, and L3. I think Alden Ehrenreich did a good job as Han, although there were a couple of scenes in the movie where I thought he and Donald Glover (Lando) were doing impressions of Harrison Ford and Billie Dee Williams, other than those two scenes I thought they were able to make the characters there own. There are a few very cool sequences that I think people will enjoy especially that famous one that Han would never shut up about in the original trilogy. Also, best cameo for a certain Star Wars character of whom I wish would get their own movie, just sayin.
I did have a few problems with the movie. Most of my issues came with a couple of odd scenes that might have been due to the changing of directors. This is one of those movies that had an infamous issue that resulted in the original directors being replaced and there are a couple of scenes where it felt like tonally, they just didn't fit. I also thought that the first part of the movie was heavily cliched to the point where I was rolling my eyes. It wasn't that it was slow it was just I have seen things like that in movies so much that I knew what was going to happen.
The movie is PG-13 and has a runtime of two hours and fifteen minutes. For the most part, the movie is paced well and there are only a couple of slow parts in the film. There are violence and action but no gore and while the main villain of the film can be a little much he doesn't do anything on screen that warrants any eye shielding.
I enjoyed this movie and thought it was a fun ride. I know the Star Wars fanbase is a very passionate one but in all honesty, I think it works better as a side story than Rogue One did. I give this movie a MATINEE. Not the movie I asked for but one that after watching it, I'm not mad about seeing. Have you seen Solo? What did you think? Leave a comment and as always thanks for reading.
